Larry Fitz becomes Pitt’s 11th pro football hall of famer. Aaron Donald will be the 12th in a couple years. Only Notre Dame and USC have more. Pretty crazy for a program that’s been the dictionary definition of mid for over 40 years.

I agree - but if Pitt football has done one thing well in the past 30 years its put guys in the NFL regardless of the team's success.Originally posted by Chuck Norris View PostLarry Fitz becomes Pitt’s 11th pro football hall of famer. Larry not winning the Heisman still bothers me.

That just showed what sheep the Heisman voters were, and mostly still are. Give it to the quarterback with the best stats on a highly ranked team unless there’s a transcendent RB. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. A WR who wasn’t also a dynamic kick returner had never won the Heisman, and still didn’t until Devonta Smith in 2020. For Larry to face all the positional, regional and national biases, play on a team that wasn’t great and come as close to winning as he did showed how dominant he was. And then you have that clown Ron Cook, who gets grief to this day for voting for Jason White, and deserves every bit of it.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

Ron was an ego maniac. He couldn't have even picked Jason White out of a lineup.Originally posted by Chuck Norris View Post

That vote was all for his own publicity.
It worked, I suppose, as much as it can in a B-level media market.

That game last night reminded me of a number of Steelers games this season where the offense was obviously overmatched from the start and you knew it was a matter of time before it got out of hand.
The Patriots were a year or two ahead of schedule. And they got a huge break when Bo Nix got hurt because I think Denver would’ve beat them handily if he had played. Before the 49ers got completely decimated with injuries it’s entirely possible the three best teams in football were in the NFC West.

Not football, but in the world of professional sports, Pirates HOF 2nd baseman Bill Mazeroski passed over the weekend at age 89. He hit what remains the sport’s greatest home run, the only World Series game 7 walkoff home run in the history of the sport, in 1960.
A couple interesting notes, the Pirates beat the Yankees 4 games to 3 despite being out scored in the series 55-27. The Yankees won 3 blowouts, while the Pirates took the trophy with 4 close wins. And not since that 1960 World Series has a Pittsburgh sports team clinched a championship at home. The 1971 and 79 Pirates clinched their titles on the road as did the Penguins in all 5 of their Stanley Cup wins.

It's cool the section of the wall he hit it over is still standing in Oakland.Originally posted by Chuck Norris View PostNot football, but in the world of professional sports, Pirates HOF 2nd baseman Bill Mazeroski passed over the weekend at age 89. Wow...no home title clinch since 1960?
In my lifetime....
1967 Sixers (I was a newborn) clinched the title at the Cow Palace in San Francisco against the Warriors (who are still out on loan to the Bay Area from Philadelphia as are the A's)
1974 Flyers clinched the Cup against the Bruins at the Spectrum
1975 Flyers clinched the Cup against the Sabres at the old Aud in Buffalo
1980 Phillies clinched the WS against the Royals at The Vet
1983 Sixers clinched the title against the Lakers at The Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, CA
2008 Phillies clinched the WS against the Rays at Citizens Bank Park
Obviously the Super Bowls were in neutral locations.
Oh....when the US Hockey team wins the Gold Medal...Philadelphia has won a championship later in that year.
1960 - Gold Medal in Squaw Valley....Eagles beat Lombardi and the Packers in December.
1980 - The Miracle on Ice...Philadelphia becomes the only city evr to put their teams in all four title rounds with only the Phillies winning (the Flyers were robbed).
So...hopefully that trends continues but I won't bank on the Sixers or Flyers doing it.

I do believe the only potential clinching home game in all this time has been game 5 of the 2016 Cup finals against San Jose. The Pens unfortunately couldn’t get it done that night with The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels, the inspiration for the name of the famed HBK line, in the arena.Originally posted by IUPNation View Post

Of all the stupid things I spent money on during college, I had the nerve to collect Bill Mazeroski cards. So I have every Topps card of his (only regular ones, no all stars) from 1957-1972 plus the 1960 Pirates team card and a card from the 1961 set that was specific to Game 7 of the 1960 world series. I should probably have them framed together or something better than sitting in a box.Originally posted by Chuck Norris View PostNot football, but in the world of professional sports, Pirates HOF 2nd baseman Bill Mazeroski passed over the weekend at age 89. I collected posters in the late 1960s for sale from the back of Sports Illustrated. The Pirates were my team. I have large posters of Maz, Clemente, and Gene Alley, not to mention baseball cards. The Mazersoki cards could be worth selling.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View Post
