The Portal, 2025 Style

That's been a big "if" at Ship the past couple of seasons. They have been unable to keep upperclassmen on the o-line, so the Raiders are constantly starting freshmen and sophs. The results have been that a team known for its high-scoring offenses just a few years back has been lingering near the bottom recently. And it's probably no accident that they've had injury trouble at the QB position during this time. They need to get it straightened out for Ship to contend in the East again.

OL is obviously a very difficult spot to plug and play young guys. Aside from typically being undersized, they just aren't physically strong enough yet. Their speed isn't developed yet.

They take some beatings early and their confidence gets shot.

Our freshmen OL were all 'high school big and strong'. Now they have some real nasty dudes across from them - often times 3-4 years older, much faster and stronger, etc.

That's probably the one position you absolutely want to redshirt all of them. It just takes time. Not to mention, of course, when the young OL takes a beating, in turn so do the RBs and QB.

There are quite a few D2 players who started out at JUCO (or played in Juco at one point) who were out of eligibility. With the lawsuit that went through this past year, a lot of these guys thought they would have another year of D2 ball. NCAA said no, it only counts for D1, so you have some of these guys entering the portal (did they really need to if they are out of D2 eligibility?) and looking to go D1 for their last year of eligibility.

Tanner Hess was one of 12 Ship seniors honored on senior day last year. He must using his final of eligibility as a graduate student much like OL Josh Waite going to Ohio U. Ethan Arneson will be a great replacement for Hess.

Arneson is a stud. If he can get some blocking, he's going to thrive.

Rock wideout and kick returner Kylon Wilson has transferred to Youngstown State. Somehow missed that he entered the portal. Quick review of his elon app shows nothing but FCS offers.

That is a big loss, the first significant player ( all conference) I can recall leaving, following position coach. I kind of thought that Ramper ( after is playoff season stats) would be the one to level up.

OL Varrius Farrell decommitted from LHU and is now headed to Slippery Rock. Good move for him.
