Rebuilds seem to have big rosters and big recruiting classes. Especially when the new coach brings a philosophy shift.

Angelo signed 27 Freshman. Where do you see 40?Originally posted by Fred View Post
I don't really know. Retention rates for College Football is going to be way different moving forward because of the portal. I would think that signing a bunch of freshman is a solid strategy moving forward. If you don't and you have a bunch of kids hit the portal in December it could be really hard to run spring ball and have competition in your program. Maybe that's why Angelo has 40 of them. Maybe these coaches are evolving to the new environment.
I saw a report yesterday that stated 47%-68% retention rate. Not sure how accurate those #'s are.
IMO. Signing a big freshman class is playing the odds. Maybe you will get a few good ones and cut the bad. Back in Csrthels time that worked (His M.O.) because it was hard for a player to transfer. But now, I am concerned that the few good players will jump ship via portal, and then what are you left with?
Same can happen if you sign 25. BUT, with a lower #, the philosophy is the GOOD players feel wanted and that can build loyalty.
I never have liked big freshman signing classes. I thinks it's more of an ego thing for the HC.
If what you say is true and Angelo signed 40 incoming freshman, I would be concerned, becausecthst goes agsinst the nationally recognized program Girsch built.Last edited by ASUPops; 08-22-2023, 01:30 PM.

Yeah the AD was looking for ANY reason to keep Hughes and that was comical I will give you that.Originally posted by WT_TKW View Post
Yeah, and it still took the AD over a week to fire Hughes.
I wonder how he's doing trying to fill our open date this season? Maybe he'll have something by Thanksgiving.
I give more of a pass not filling the last game of the year. Most of the open dates are schools far east of here and either side probably have no interest in playing a road game if either one had a playoff berth on the line.

It depends on the size of the step.Originally posted by ASUPops View Post
So they are just a step under top D1 prospects??
Or maybe Angelo, MSU-Texas, UTPB, TAMUK, ENMU, etc wouldn't either?
Maybe Angelo passed on some of them. They only have 36 freshmen on the roster. How many of those will be there next year?

It's evidently too hard for our AD. ;)Originally posted by AngeloFan View Post
Ever wonder how hard it is to do that on a one time basis in the middle of the season. There is no way you can give the other guys a rematch since you have to play SRSU in that spot next year.

Truth in that but it is a step in a positive direction.
Its a huge step from November when the team quit on the coach and all the players were running for the hills to the transfer portal.

Lynn's retention rate, team gpa and graduation rate at his prior two stops was really good. Time will tell.Originally posted by ASUPops View Post
