Ten was a generous final number. Joe could have -- should have -- hung a big number.

The game today wasn't as close as the final score. I think the biggest difference between these two schools is the bench. Gannon gets nothing from the bench players. Until Gannon gets some factor players coming off the bench, they won't get over that hump.

40-23 IUP at half. Could be worse.

After nine lead changes and eight ties, the IUP women held on to defeat Gannon 62-57 at the Hammermill Center.

Gannon (5-16, 5-10 PSAC West) got as close as 54-53 with 1:43 left, but IUP (14-5, 12-3) went 8-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch to escape Erie with the win.

The talk about the Gannon attendance got me thinking about the KCAC this year -- which has also seemed more empty than usual.

    YEAR AVG HOME ATTENDANCE
2016-17 1,040 (note: leads PSAC by far which is scary in itself)
    2015-16 1,363
    2014-15 1,330
    2013-14 2,090
    2012-13 1,586

With four home dates left -- with students finally back -- I'd assume that average number for this year increases a decent amount. But, as of today in comparison to just the 2013-14 season ... almost exactly half the number of people per game. That's a heck of a drop-off. The best year for 'average' attendance filled up slightly more than half of the 4,000 seats.

The team has been a consistent winner over this stretch. The venue is fantastic. So, what's missing? Why is attendance declining? The pricing is a factor but the KCAC has been expensive in recent years, too. Oddly, the largest announced crowd this year came at the Field House.

I think the Gannon men's team needs a few more years playing the new style before you see a noticeable increase in attendance. I've always said putting an iup talent level and style team would fill the hammermill. i think the style had to change because season tickets didn't sell out. Hopefully they didn't wait to long. I know some who refuse to even take a new look.

Up until recently IUP was the exact opposite ... and was struggling to start games.

I hope you're right about the crowd. Saturday afternoon games don't draw a well as Saturday night games. This game is scheduled for an afternoon because the Gannon athletic hall of fame banquet is in the evening. The inductees will be honored at halftime of the men's game.

Still, should be the biggest crowd of the season. Fans are starting to come back after last year's 7-19 debacle. Plus, this team is much more aggressive offensively and plays a far more entertaining brand of basketball compared to Reilly's past teams.

Big starts are one of Gannon's strengths. Gannon's had the lead after five minutes in 15 of its 18 games this season.
