  • I would have never thought Drury would lose both games of league play at S&T. For the women another 4th quarter defensive breakdown but combined with poor shooting and disaster. The offense had little motion. We are indeed becoming (are) a mid-level GLVC team
The men’s team had some hot shooting early but Rolla brought it. Both S&T teams are much improved over the last few years and it shows, particularly the men’s side. Drury men are so close but just keep coming up short. We are better than the record but it may not matter at season end for the coach

This is painfully true. The girls had been playing well up until today, but just couldn't buy a bucket. This team is so thin that they have almost zero room for error. That was on display today. They wasted a triple-double from Daniels, only the fourth player in program history to record one. Moving forward, I expect them to rebound since the league is terrible, but losing to S&T for the first time in over 12 years should be a warning of what's to come. Kaci Bailey and her staff are average at X's and O's and a below-average at recruiting.

On the men's side, I guess you'd have to say the most disappointing team in the league is Truman at 2-4 since they were picked as preseason favorites, but Drury has to be 1b in that category. Many followers of the program, including myself, thought this was the year they would take a massive step forward. With the talent on their roster, I thought they'd be closer to where S&T is vs. where they actually sit in the standings alone in dead last. They just don't play hard enough. Bottom line. Some of that is on the players, but the coaches bear responsibility too. Chris Foster is a wonderful man, but so far only one of his Drury teams has made the GLVC tournament and it was in his first year here coming off of COVID where literally every team got a berth. They were also blown out in that game. With a 1-6 start, it's certainly still possibility to string together enough wins to get into the tournament, but if not then it may be time for Nyla to actually conduct a real national search for a basketball coach at the end of the season.

I agree with your points on Foster. I had heard he had some health issues early in his tenure at Drury and I wonder how much of that has played a part in this. Nonetheless, this is a business and you have to meet specific standards at some point. However, watching the direction the women’s program is headed, they will be in the same spot as the men’s program in a year or two. Will Nyla fire Bailey after sneaking her in the back door like she did? If you are going to fire Foster, you have to do it this year or be ready to fire both in my opinion. Nyla will never admit her hiring of Bailey was terrible, unethical, and derailing of a national program.

Anytime a woman scores a triple double at the D2 level is very very impressive. For whatever reason, it just doesn't happen that often in the women's game as opposed to the men who you will see it more frequently. A number of women can get a double-double, but 10 assists is extremely difficult for someone that also can get 10+ rebounds and 10+ points. Two out of three ain't bad, but when you get the trifecta then you are in rare company.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see all four triple doubles and I would agree with it is difficulty. If you recall Hailey did it with steals/points/rebounds- simply an amazing day at the O. Daniel’s should be extremely proud of her accomplishments at Drury. We should be encouraged by her play but it will clearly take a “Team” effort to get back to the top.

            • One player can't do it all.

I see Drury's DEI day is this Thursday. I guess they didn't get the memo that is no longer the "in" thing as many companies and colleges have figured that out and moved on.

              • Drury administration really struggling to “read the room”. Will DEI day pull more fans into the gym or slowly begin to turn more fans away? I’d argue the latter…

                • I get why Drury fans are becoming increasingly frustrated. The women's program was one of the best in the nation for several years. Not sure why the men never reached similar success, but both are not where they need to be given the resources the programs have.

When you focus on an agenda versus putting the best people in positions to succeed, you run the risk of becoming mediocre. A lot of big universities are figuring that out after being embarrassed multiple times over the past year.

                  • Nice couple of games for both teams this week. On Saturday it appeared the women’s coach may have learned a little from the past missteps. Big first quarter then starting the 2nd with the full squad of second teamers leading to very poor play on both sides. Luckily she pulled the plug on that and went back to the starters. Depth is a real issue and clearly evident. Brooks has been a real addition to the initial lineup and hopefully a permanent starter for the remainder of the year. Big question is how do you get the second team some reps without sacrificing the overall game?
Coach Foster is out again and same as the past, team appears to play better for the assistant. I saw this a couple years ago with Chris Carr stepping in. Not sure what the illness with coach is but it’s concerning. Hope he gets well soon.

                    • Happy for both of the teams on getting their wins this weekend. Hopefully they can carry momentum into the grueling part of the GLVC stretch.

I am finding it so difficult to get excited for these teams to play. Not sure if it is lack of buzz around the teams, lack of talent (which we have plenty of, just not being shown) or maybe it’s a me problem! I just hope these teams can get real hot and spark my interest again. Good Panthers teams are better to watch than any “pay to play” ball like in d1!

                      • A Lewis loss has put Drury women in the driver's seat to win the league, but ultimately it is going to come down to 3 matchups I think:
                        • Lewis at the end of next week
                        • At Truman the following week
                        • At Missouri St. Louis the last week of the season
Drury's early season victory over Quincy was a key win. Quincy is a decent team and play Grand Valley much tougher than Drury. While I think Lewis still has to be the favorite, a victory over them will give Drury a leg up so of the three games above, that one is the most important.

A highly esteemed supporter of Drury Athletics reached out to me last week and asked me to reconsider my decision to not support the program any longer. I agreed that the players deserve the support they expected when they signed. With this in mind, I have a little time to share a couple thoughts.

Responding to Bball fan, the Drury Men did enjoy great success during the Hesser era. This includes the 2013 national championship and 2 midwest regional championships. They also won multiple GLVC championships and post season games happened every season.

If not for Caitlynn Daniels, the women would be lucky to have 5 wins as they have no other experienced point guards. I strongly disagree with an earlier statement by another poster that there is no clear leader on this team. I stand by my pre-season statement that she deserves to be named an all-American. She is a team player first and is a double double threat every game. Drury's big losses last season to Missouri Southern when she scored 29 and the 17 point seven rebound game against Grand Valley this season proves she is capable against the best.

This team is not loaded with talent as was stated earlier by another poster. Anna Hitt is deserving of all conference awards again and is the best defender in the GLVC IMO, probably the fastest player, and is a heck of a team player. Her offense is inconsistent though.

Makaiya Brooks has become one of the most prolific three point shooters in the league. She is a step slow on defense though and this has hurt the team.

6'4" Aiden Moxness has been an asset of late off the bench. From the outside, it looks like the off season effort to become a force inside wasn't there throughout her career. Sara Mendal deserves that starting spot.

Gabby Burns started the first half of the season. A good defender and team player, but below average on offense.

These things considered, Daniel's numbers could have been a lot better with an established team. I also think Bailey has done a good job considering this, though the lack of local recruiting is concerning.

Drury has young talent that will be good in time. Sophomores Mendal and Rhi Gibbons will be stars in this league and are good already.

Also noticed that former Lady Panther Reese Schaaf is putting up the same numbers in MIAA play as she did in the GLVC.

She is having a nice season. Put up 32 last night. But surprisingly, Central Missouri is not. They have no bench and are grinding players into the ground playing them way too many minutes. Last night 3 players (including Allie Clevenger, played over 40+ minutes with an overtime game. That's just crazy and not sustainable. In fairness to them they lost two key players to D1 schools, so that is a lot to overcome.

Would have liked to see Central and Drury go at it. Sadly they were not on the schedule this year. Would be hard to say who is the better team.

Glad you are still supporting the players. No matter how stupid an administration is, it's not the players' fault.

                            • Daniel’s has clearly been a real asset to the program as has been pointed on by a few including myself. Also agree the win tally would be much lower without her. To the point of being stuck in the past we have had several women over the years that took absolute control while in the floor. Daniel’s is a leader no doubt but don’t substitute leader with Floor General. Big difference even to Beth last year or Demitz, Bernard, etc.
Big fan of Brooks but the assessment of defense is completely accurate. McKendry went at her last Thursday specifically in the first quarter and scored several layups on her. But when she gets that ball on the pass and shoots without hesitation it’s spectacular.
Crazynewt glad you’re back to being a fan. Seems like we all want to see our Drury teams do well and we need all the support.

Thanks booster. That is a good point about floor general versus leader. We really have no way of knowing if Caitlynn could have reached the level of a Damitz. The Lady Panthers have always had a very deep talented team, as many as 10 players deep. Caitlynn has only 3 capable and dependable teammates at the most. This team is rarely on the same page and I think it's a lack of experience and overall talent of the entire roster.
