  • Tyler Jenkins will definitely be back for the 2018-19 season. Got this directly from his own mouth. The docs have given him clearance to play.

He is not practicing yet as he is recovering
from shoulder surgery (remember when Ray Spalding fell on him in the exhibition game and Tyler was called for the foul?)

This will go a long way to shore up the guard position and defense next year. With the three early signees and Betts coming off a redshirt, I doubt there will be any transfers or late scholarships.

Barring any injuries, if CC can get healthy, we should have a solid, experienced team next season.

Good news, indeed, regarding Jenkins. Thanks for the scoop.

Liking the idea of a starting lineup of: Jenkins, Fleming/Chitty, Corbett, Cook, and Eberhard, with Weyer and Chitty/Fleming providing offense and "spark" off the bench.

Great news. A lot of experience coming back. My only concern at this point is replacing the offense Bach provided. There were times this past season when good defenses found a way to gum up our motion offense and Bach single handedly seemed to carry the offensive load by himself - slashing to the basket or hitting outside shots. Maybe Eberhard will need to look to take more shots himself instead of attempting low percentage passes to teammates - I don't want to lose that "pass first" mentality, but Adam is a good shooter.

You are right about the team becoming dependent on Bach for offense, but I suspect that problem will simply go away because the option will not be there and there are mulitple talented options available, including Alex Cook from the get go. The last few years, Scotty has gotten a significant transfer in the off season. I really can never figure out how the scholarship numbers work, but I would be surprised if he doesn't get somebody. There is probably a decent chance for a defection or two, maybe a significant one.

Yeah I'm worried about the possibility of a defection too. With that many experienced players coming back, someone may be getting worried about playing time, etc.

              • Posted by Ben Weyer on Facebook that Caleb Taylor is transferring to The Cumberlands (NAIA) and will be eligible to play. I think that his girlfriend played ball there. I think that this is actually good for him and for BU freeing up a scholarship for Scottie.

Bummer in that I think Taylor could've contributed at some point, but I wish him well. An incoming transfer would not surprise me at all.

Certainly wish Caleb Taylor well. I always thought it was interesting that when he got into the game, there seemed to be an effort by everyone to get him the ball so that he could show off his skills. I sometime wonder if he had gone to a lesser GLVC school and got immediate, significant playing time, how much he would have improved. I can't blame Scotty, because he certainly was not going to decrease the time of his other, more developed front line players.

I had mentioned that Scotty has added a transfer every year for a while, so I went back and looked at the previous rosters, here are the xfers added each season:

                    09- Jeremy Kendle
                    10- Stevie Loveless
                    11-Jelani Johnson
12- Vance Hall and Jake Thelan
                    13-Donnie Hale
                    14 - Chris Whitehead
                    15 -Al Davis, Yasin Kolo
                    16- Jenkins
                    17- C. Corbett, Parker Chitty

Everyone of these guys was a big impact player, except for Donnie Hale (who quit) and Loveless (injured). Hale was brought in to be an immediate impact player. Of course, Kendle, Whitehead, Thelan, Hall, Davis turned out to be some of the best players in BU history. It seems that Scotty has worked this into his recruiting plan and he is always going to have room for a post season transfer.

I agree that it is a bit more difficult for a post up player to make a dent in the BU offense. Taylor is one of the few to try. Guys like Sprague, Suggs and even Kolo were more perimeter players at heart (Kolo had some of his best games when he stayed down low, though.) Thelen, was just Thelen. Not really a perimeter player but not so much a post up guy all the time. He just knew where to be. I think to be a positive in the offense the player has to be a threat to shoot the three (Sprague, Suggs, etc.), a slasher type (Whitehead, Troutman, etc.) or have some kind of magical pixie dust going on and just appear in the right place at the right time (Thelen!)

Bach apparently had a good outing at a recent "pro day" directed to overseas opportunities:

Thelen had some of the quickest hands around the basket I've ever seen. He was able to take a pass and in one motion get it up and onto the glass before a bigger guy had any chance of a block. He also could pivot and take a pass and make an up and under move so quickly that a slower, bigger post man could not react in time.

His first step was also quick and he used angles effectively.

Wouldn't Tanner Gibson (2013-2014) be included in that group. Wasn't he a transfer from Albany. He didn't work out, seems like he had some injury problems? I don't recall.
