That was my first year at SMSU, but like a chucklehead I didn't go to any games. Partly because I wasn't living in Marshall at the time. First one was against MSU in 2013, been hooked ever since.
Yes. That was the one that Southwest had a ten? point lead late and Thielen just kept catching pass after pass after pass. I had a really bad feeling going into that game- without him Southwest would have won.

Re: Tell us a bit about your conference

The GNAC is struggling to stay together as Humboldt State is cutting football after this season, leaving Simon Fraser, Azusa Pacific, Central Washington, and Western Oregon, as the only D2 teams playing on the West Coast. California's UC Davis went FCS after years of D2, though at 40,000 students and ranked in the top 30 academically, they profile like a D-1 school. The killer was when Sonoma State and Chico State quit football right when Western Washington, CWU, and Western Oregon, were trying to form the conference with North-South divisions. Then WWU cut the sport.

The league isn't without competitiveness or talent. Humboldt State has two current rookies on NFL teams in Ja'Quann Gardner at RB, and big O-lineman Alex Cappa playing. Western Oregon alum Tyrell Williams is a starting receiver for the Chargers, and has had a nice career there. CWU has two of the best players in the Canadian League in QB Mike Reilly and LB Adam Bighill, the latter on the New Orleans Saints for awhile. Azusa Pacific RB Terrell Watson is on an NFL roster; former WOU tight end Kevin Boss started for the NY Giants when they won a Super Bowl. There's some excellent individual talent and good coaching in the conference.

We need more freaking teams. Potential west coast candidates stay NAIA or D3, and enormous California -- with its huge, unreal junior college football and great prep football -- has ONE freaking D2 team. It's sad.

The problem is lack of teams, not lack of talent.

Any updates to what happens to the remaining GNAC team? All go independent or join other conferences?

The bands are so good that it's easy to get distracted from the games by watching them.

The powers that be don't allow UC or CSU schools to have football teams unless they're D1. This is also why Dixie State has a roster full of CA players (it also helps that NV and AZ have no D2 schools period)

The difference in academic requirements alone warrant each state having a few D2 programs. This has to affect thousands of students annually. Right now there is probably someone or department in the NCAA responsible for perspective institutions joining D2. Right now we'd have to say they're not doing a good job west of the Rockies.

NAIA football is still alive and well west of the Rockies. Same with junior college football. Sometimes those options just look more attractive.

I have to believe that's just myth. CSU Pueblo is D2. All other campuses don't really support the systems needed to field a football team.

So in order to facilitate western schools would it be fair to have some exceptions to allow them to play a couple games against non D2 teams and allow those results to be counted toward playoff eligibility?

Part of the confusion here is that in California we have two state university systems, the UC (University of California) and the CSU (California State University). CSUP is COLORADO State University of Pueblo. Too many CSUs in the country.

And don't get us started about USC (University of Southern CALIFORNIA or University of South Carolina).

Our school was called University of Southern Colorado for several years. "USC" wasn't as bad, though as the acronyms when it was called "Southern Colorado State College" or "Pueblo University".
