  • OT - PAC12 expansion

With the breaking news of Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and Fresno State moving to the PAC12, who do they target next to meet the NCAA requirement of 8 teams? Any chance they target a North Dakota State or Montana to move up?

  • #2
I think they (the new MWC) has to eventually target the Montanas and the Dakotas. The question is, do they jump. But they are clearly the best options in FCS and would keep the new MWC above the MAC and CUSA.

If they jump, it would be a pretty big shift in the FCS landscape and could eventually trickle down into some movement from D2 to FCS.

NDSU and Montana might be targets for the Mountain West as backfill options, but I'd have to think that a jump from FCS all the way to the Pac-12 would be pretty unprecedented

I'd think UNLV has to be on the radar of the PAC-12 and/or Big 12 at this point.

Is it really THAT big of a jump? I mean this alleged new 'PAC 12' is a far reach from the old Pac 12. This is more like the Mountain West getting a new name and adding Oregon State and Washington State (not exactly major players).

This isn't done yet. Six isn't enough, they need at least eight teams. Now, does Calford come back (notice that no one says Stania or Stancal). Surprised that UNLV isn't included yet. So will the MWC be further decimated or will they be able to backfill with other FBS teams? If they get hit too hard, will the Montanas move up? I see NDSU more likely to make the jump than SDSU, which is another candidate for the MWC. And then there would be openings at the FCS level. Truly a ripple effect.

I won't deny that the Pac-12 is a shell of its former self, and the gap in competition between them and the FCS is a lot smaller than it once was. However, it seems like they don't plan on going anywhere and are actively seeking to build their reputation and brand back up to what they used to be. Montana and NDSU are certainly strong programs, but for the Pac-12 to add them would undo all of that progress and cement them as a conference so far gone that they have to pull from FCS just to survive. Besides, the fact that they were able to pull away the best of the MW shows that the Pac-12 branding at least has a little bit of influence still, so they could probably get their picks of G5 members to help bolster their numbers. The gap on the field may be small now, but the gap off the field is still very much there.

It's going to get real old, real fast for Stanford and Cal being in the ACC. That is some crazy travel. I wonder what kind of deal they signed when they joined. The ACC is famous for having some very hefty exit fees (ask FSU and Clemson).

That said, if the PAC could get those two back, it certainly helps add some legitimacy.

I've lost track of some of these teams ... where are the two Arizona schools now?

Stanford and Cal can be much more competitive in the revenue sports in the PAC 8/10/12 than the ACC as well. But…yeah, that potential exit fee.

Both Arizona and Arizona State are in the Big 12, which is another mathematical error.

Both Cal and Stanford (and SMU) signed ACC grant of rights when they joined the conference. They’re stuck unless the ACC implodes. Otherwise, they’ll have to pay an enormous and ridiculous exit fee, which would also mean leaving a P5 conference for a G5 conference.

The 4 Dakota's and both Montana's are more than likely for the "old" Mt. West instead of the "new" Mt. West (it ain't the PAC 12 ... stop it!).

Vegas should be an auto for the new league and then they could look for Texas-area teams? Also, add a Gonzaga or St. Mary's for Left Coast flavor. The "old" Mt. West, sans UNLV, should pickup UTEP and New Mexico State and look to FCS if it makes sense.

I'm betting they won't be the last MWC teams to fill out the new PAC-12.

Some have suggested that the 4 schools removed from the MWC is a scare tactic for the other schools to pay their own exit fee's, as it's been revealed the coffers of the PAC2 are paying the exit fees of these 4 schools.

The changes will keep coming, but Cal/Stanford could make it back I just don't see why they would make the move to a different P5 just to jump back to the PAC and be a G5 member?
On that thought, I believe UTSA, and UNLV will be added. Potentially Utah State over UTSA. I would not doubt Gonzaga gets a call, and St. Mary's. They can work it out that they get no Football money but hold more of the Basketball stream if that entices them.

Mountain West is essentially going to have to pick up Big Sky members or Montana Schools/ Dakota schools...Then the back filling continues to flow until ultimately Dakota State and Bellevue take MSU and Augie's place in the NSIC. :)
