Sad that they are punting on a program that produced more revenue because it's just too hard for them to administer and it's hard for "families" to understand. Hey, join the real world, Mansfield University. And then, "in other business" why would a Provost from Washington & Lee take the presidency at Millersville? Bet he has a long term vision for the 'Ville.' Yeah, right.

Are these kids actually citing statistics from "a survey of 28 respondents?" This is supposed to be a college level student newspaper, not a jr. high one.

It's not worth publishing anything based on 28 results. Way too small of a sample size.

        .... waste of time article.

Millersville's new president was my second choice when he interviewed for the Bloom job. He had some interesting ideas, and could turn out to be a good one.

He also was a candidate for the Slippery Rock Presidency opening, but was not chosen.

You know how sometimes MLB coaches drop down to AAA for a manager job? That's what PASSHE is for presidential hopefuls. His last salary at Washington & Lee was $300k. He takes a small financial hit (somewhat absorbed by the free housing & car lease) to learn how to be a college president. If they survive with the state bureaucracy and union shenanigans for 4-5 years they can then put themselves in the running for a private school job making $100k more without the weight of bureaucracy and union shenanigans. Also no rules on how to spend money.

They have the power to negotiate more budget-friendly pay and benefits packages and aren't dealing with the state-wide union.

The demand for 14 state regional universities is there even with the growth of the Pitt and Penn State campuses and the private schools discounting over 50% of sticker price to compete. The demand for traditional age residential college freshmen isn't there - but its there for the students who commute or complete online degree programs. The public thinks of the traditional 18-22 year old college student living in a dorm on a grassy treelined campus with ivy-covered buildings. The reality is that most students are commuters and adults never entering the dorms. So when you close Mansfield or Clarion because they're less popular with 17 year olds you screw over the 25-50 year olds who need affordable college educations or who must commute from home while working and supporting a family. And a good portion of that crowd are veterans using GI Bill benefits and working class Pennsylvanians who were recently laid off or going to school in case of layoff as well as working adults seeking a career change.
What percentage of students at these remote schools are non-traditional? And the demand for online degree programs can be met from anywhere.

12% of Mansfield undergraduates are age 25 or older. 45% of Mansfield students commute or live locally. I don't see a breakdown in their IR data on student residency that breaks down commute from home versus moving from campus to a local apartment.

Not many have made this transition though. Plus these days, you are being hired to downsize, which is never a good resume builder.

Plus the comments on this article show how the locals will respond to you if you're not Joe Sixpack, Ph.D.

It's mind-blowing. As our reliance on technology increases our individual bigotry and ignorance is running hand in hand with it.

The state schools can either ignore the need for change and run the real risk of being destroyed by it or they can at least try to be agressive in changing how they do business across the full spectrum of business to try to become profitable (and thereby save their skins). The real time to act would have been five years ago when this freight train of declining enrolement and decreasing state funding started but that clearly didn't happen. Sadly, it is probably too late for a number of schools to do much more than complain and watch their college slowly sink beneth the waves of red ink.

I'd say we have dumpster fire aspects... sure. The idiots commenting on this article just show the racism and bigotry of some PA residents. They are shameful people and deserve to be treated as such. Best of luck to the new MU president! I'm confident in the job he can do. I'll take progress over bigotry any day of the week.
