Which team is more popular in Philly ... Sixers or Flyers?Originally posted by ironmaniup View Post
But the city leadership is a joke, letting the Sixers do that about face on the center city arena though. Used up all that political capital, just to give the Sixers better negotiating position.
Obviously the Yinzers don't have an NBA team. I was always curious about the dynamic. I know NBA games have some insane ticket prices. Of course, the NHL sure does, too.
I always love when the Phillies come to Pittsburgh. Their fans always travel well -- and, by baseball standards, are very engaged.

It all started with the Sixers having the negotiating position of leaving the city. That's a lot of negotiating power. I think there is just too much opposition to a Center City move for any of the teams, even though i started to like the idea for the Sixers this time around.Originally posted by ironmaniup View Post

Still not as good a setup as Philadelphia. RFK is an island in the middle of the roadways surrounding it. Comcast wants to build up the Sports Complex to be like the Battery where the Braves Stadium is located except it’s in an actual city. The vast swath of parking lots surrounding all three current facilities down there will be built upon…Originally posted by Ram040506 View Post
Fair enough. With the Commanders seemingly to have been greenlit by DC to return to the RFK site in the future, at that point DC will have nearly all of those advantages as well.

There is no comparison. It's the Sixers. The Flyers were popular back in the 1980's and into the '90's, Since then, not too much. The Sixers are a franchise that has a national following, not just a local one, current season notwithstanding.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

They had New Jersey dangling 800 million to the Sixers to move to Camden which would be even worse than Market East. Nobody from the Western Suburbs would be going to Camden due to the hassle of getting through the city twice to get back and forth and Camden isn’t exactly a garden spot in the Garden State. Philadelphia takes pride our teams played in one spot and it works and nobody wanted it to change.Originally posted by ironmaniup View Post

The City isn’t paying for the arena and they still are going to get the investment on Market East.

Lately? Sixers because they were competing..but historically..the Flyers had a more hardcore fan base. However the fans from the 70’s have died off or are in nursing homes and since Ed Snider died it’s not been the same. They need to forge a new identity that buries 1975 for good.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

The Hierarchy is:
Iggles (will always be #1)
Phillies
Sixers (for now)
Flyers ( will jump the Sixers if they get legit again)

There were years where Sixers playoff games didn’t sell out and the Flyers always sold out. But the NBA is more glamorous so the Sixers pulled ahead post tanking..but they suck this year and this city is pissed off at them. Embiid is being a bum..Paul George a waste of money. They blew it when they let Jimmy Butler go to Miami.Originally posted by iupgroundhog View Post

Philadelphia is one of only 3 cities that have 4 major sports teams playing within the city limits. The other two are Chicago and Denver. So far, they must be doing something right.Originally posted by IUPNation View Post

My guess is that the change of direction for the Sixers arena had more to do with Comcast than the Sixers or city council. Comcast/NBCUniversal are leaking money from their RSNs and their low-ratings cable offerings to the point that they actually spun off a bunch of their TV networks. The local branch saw the writing on the wall that the Sixers were going to go somewhere and that a brand new arena competing with the WFC for concerts and other events might crimp their cash flow even more so they came back to Harris and negotiated a partnership. I imagine neither side is 100% happy with split ownership but it spreads out risk and gets them each one thing they want: event fees for Harris and Co. and not competing for events on the Comcast side.“No matter how badly things get blown apart, we will always plant flowers again.”

Center City doesn’t need sports arenas to bring life to it. Over 100,000 people live there..it has it already.Originally posted by iupgroundhog View Post

I also think Harris can’t afford to build that arena o. His own and a new foosball stadium for his Landover Taco Holders (the W on their helmet looks like a taco holder)Originally posted by TheBigCat2192 View PostMy guess is that the change of direction for the Sixers arena had more to do with Comcast than the Sixers or city council. It seems like Tomlin is leaning toward going with Justin Fields at QB next year. Apparently Arthur Smith preferred working with Fields and his relationship with Russ wasn’t great.
Of course this time last year Tomlin said the QB for 2024 was currently on the roster and within a few months the room was completely overhauled. And Arthur Smith could wind up somehow landing a HC job. Stay tuned
