I actually thought about the Starbucks example when I first read this. But the $ amount is only a part of the purchase decision. Probably a small part. It's just wrong, it's exploitative, it's not inclusive, and it's basically a rip-off. So, if you are ok with just getting ripped off for a few bucks, I guess it isn't too bad.

      Similar to the Starbucks experience!

Sure the money is small time but imagine for a second that you’re a fan of a 6 or 7 seed. Do you shell out 19.95 and hope your team pulls off two upsets or do you buy piecemeal and end up spending more if they win twice? It’s a terrible deal for anyone who isn’t a hardcore D2 junkie and there aren’t too many of them around. It’s anti-fan and frankly I’m not convinced it makes long-term business sense from the NCAA side.

I'm going to be shelling out the $20 even though Shepherd is the underdog this weekend. I don't mind them charging for it, but the price point is utterly ridiculous. I can get much more on ESPN+ for much less. This is basically fleecing parents and alumni who just want to watch the game.

Since it is a NCAA event, students have to pay to get in as well. However, at THE ROCK the SGA is picking up the tab for any student who wants to attend the game.

That leads to this question if 500 students go @$5; how is that $2500 divided up??

It's the same thing NFHS has done to high-school football streaming, and it makes me sick.

You have mom-'n-pop streamers plugging away all season, and when it gets to the playoffs, the rights fees knock them right out of contention.

Rock SGA is great but that's pretty standard.

The PIAA had a contract with Flowrestling (rip off monopoly) to webcast anything beyond the district individual wrestling tournaments. i.e. regionals and states. Last year (in March), Flo decided they weren't going to cover the regionals. The PIAA said nobody else could cover them because of the agreement with Flowrestling. I made a post on a popular FB wrestling page about how they were restricting competition and depriving the fans of viewing it. The next morning when I woke up and turned on my computer, the PIAA had changed course and allowed other webcasts of the regionals. Yeah, I guess I am that guy. lol. Seriously, it was very satisfying to stand up to the PIAA and they relented.

My issue isn't really that they're monetizing it. It's the amount. And for that amount, I expect top notch coverage. Honestly, I feel like $10-$15 for the regionals would be fair.

There seems to be a concerted effort to suck the joy out of competitive sports at every level, from high school to D1. God forbid that anyone should watch a sporting event without someone making big coin out of it.

I was wondering that. For a fee, I sure don't want to hear student announcers who barely know what sport they are announcing. Bloom's crew last weekend made my head spin.

Or some schools have the single camera that was made in 1997.

There will be no free video available for NCAA Playoff games this year. The NCAA entered into a partnership that requires all schools to stream games behind a paywall beginning this year. Each game will cost $9.95 or fans can get access to all playoff games in the first three rounds for $19.95. More information on this will be shared later in the week, but we wanted to alert our fans that are accustomed to watching our broadcasts for free, that we will be required by the NCAA to charge for playoff games.
Ugh, this has some similarities to ESPN+ where ESPN now wants you to pay twice for content that you used to have to pay for only once.

Only a small number of people relatively-speaking care about the D2 (or for that matter, D3) playoffs, so charging people to watch those games is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Fewer, not more, people will watch D2 playoff games as a result of the NCAA's decision.

Just wondering, if someone is living close to or going to the game, can they do live streaming the game through social media? Or it is against the NCAA rules?

                                Very much against NCAA rules.
