Almost moot. Today is a completely different world in NCAA athletics.
Actually closer to 30 years ago than 40, but your point is well take.

Can you imagine a school voluntarily leaving the Missouri Valley Conference to join Division 2? It was just as unbelievable then as it would be now.

      Good luck with that.

Herb, correct me if I am wrong. But, wasn’t it West Texas State University at the time they decided to drop down? The school was a stand alone system getting pushed down in Austin much like East Texas State, Texas A&I and others by the big boys for funding. Today WT is part of the system not an outsider looking in. WT is in much a much better financial situation than the one that left D1. So, as you like to say we are not comparing apples to apples.

Now, as far as D1 goes there may be an opportunity in the very near future. WAC is on the verge of collapsing. Chicago State is all but history, UMKC is losing so much money that they are exploring dropping to D2, and CSU Bakersfield has jumped ship. No D1 school in their right mind would join this conference. The WAC is seriously considering FCS to keep their conference alive and D2 call ups will be the only way I see that it can happen. It would be like the MVFC.

You are correct that WT Athletics was in poor financial shape. But that didn’t have anything to do with the school being “stand alone”. It was about gross incompetence and mismanagement.

And it was also the gross incompetence and mismanagement that caused WT to seek a life raft from A&M. The fact that WT needed A&M to get them out of the ditch is embarrassing to me to this day. It was not a happy day for me when West Texas State became one of the dwarfs of Texas A&M. We gave the panhandle’s proud university to College Station.

I get that you don’t like WT being part of A&M system, but it has been a win for WT. State funding now is a priority for WT and the other dwarfs. Political representation is real. It’s hard to work on limited resources whether you are competent or not.

Tech is a second class citizen and has gotten a lot of raw deals when it comes to the tax revenues of West Texas. Texas Legislators use west Texas tax money for tu & Aggie and snub Tech. It’s all about who you have in your back pocket in Austin.

Right now WT and the other dwarfs are enjoying growth and prosperity. Doesn’t seem like a bad deal to me.

Never said I didn’t like the relationship, nor that there aren’t benefits to it.

The paper reported WT considering that exact move when the LSC was near imploding. Not sure how much of that was factual or not.

It would be a great move for the RMAC crossing into Texas ! Black Hills Away game would be the only trip thats longer than kingsville.

Is there legs this time to WAC collapsing or dropping to FCS? It's been talked about & rumored ever since they lost their big names to the MWC. Has anything been written about it recently? I can't even name 3 other members off the top, other than the ones above.

The WAC is currently at nine.

Cal-Baptist joins this year from D2

CSU-Bakersfield will be leaving for the Big West in 2020

Chicago State still seems to be breathing

Grand Canyon is doing very well

UMKC is still D1 for now

New Mexico State still hopes for an invite from an FBS conference

Seattle still hopes to go to the WCC

UTRGV is the only D1 school that I don't have a cap from........yet. Oops- I need a Cal Baptist one now too.

Utah Valley is a school that I know very little about

Sounds like the island of misfit toys to me. A conference stretching from the upper midwest to the Mexico border, to CA, to the northwest, sounds like a conference in a state of perennial jeopardy.

UMKC would go to the Summit if they would take them back. Travel is killing them. Or they could drop to D2.

I haven't heard much about Chicago State lately but no one in Illinois wants to face the fact that they should merge them with another school like Governors State University.
