Hein was the QB for BSU when they got this upswing going back around 2015-16-17 etc. He's had a chance to learn under Pike (OC) and Bolte (HC) at Bemidji..and I think there's real value in that. Bolte has become one of the most respected head coaches in the D2 midwest with how they go about things as a program and the hard nosed manner in which they play. Getting one of his most valued coaches as the NSU OC is a good hire for the Wolves..but he's got quite the task ahead of him with them graduating the two top wideouts in the history of the program..and having a QB recouping an injury (Colton Hackel) and no clear cut RB1, etc.not to mention coming in after spring ball.

Side note....I've gotten to know Coach Hein over the years and covered him as a player. Really good dude.

That said, NSU has to make the best of that situation..and I think they have with this hire. I'd expect Hein to run the offensive side of things and then Schmidt to run the D..after things weren't great on that side a year ago. Sometimes a HC just feels the needs to call-it if their neck is the one on the line.
Good breakdown on the whole thing. If Hein can stick around for awhile (will Schmidt get a few more years?), I think this will be a good move. Will be following NSU closer than in the past

      • Wayne State loses offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Collin Prosser who will take the same roles down at Northwest Missouri State under new Bearcat and former Wildcat head coach John McMenamin.

WSC I believe is losing at least one other assistant coach to Maryville, but I haven't seen it publicly announced yet, so will withhold commenting just yet on that one.

        • If Coach Masters is looking to keep things in house, Brody Rohach would be the likely next OC. Great young coach who has gained plenty of experience at various different stops. That would be my pick.

          • These yearly carousels are interesting to watch. Seems like some moves happen quickly, others once the coaches convention wraps up and others not long after signing day. It will certainly be another year to watch

            • Serious question. Is this the first season in maybe a decade or more that EVERY NSIC head coach will return for the next season? I can't remember when that last happened (if ever)

Yeah I don’t think it’s happened since last year, been a long time.

Bolte was mentioned in the Grand Forks Herald about the open UND position (along with several others), but I see the Hawks have filled it.

Lack of FBS openings is my theory.

                      • Lobos hire former NSIC guy Jason Eck to replace Bronco Mendenhall.

Gotta be a tough job coaching down there in the Duke City.

Saw on X today that Coach Masters officially announced Brody Rohach as the next OC. Excited to see what Brody does with the offense!

Eck has moved up the ladder in his 26 years of coaching with 12 different stops and having 5 kiddos to boot. His oldest son is a starting linebacker at Idaho, surely he will hit the portal. Eck's wife must be a pro at moving. I wish him good fortune at his 1st FBS HC endeavor.

The son is already in the portal and already getting Power 5 (or whatever it is now) offers
