  • It seems Gannon's guys are enjoying themselves more, especially the change from JR's seeming disinterest on offense - or at least his complete lack of creativity on offense - which demanded that guys pass up open shots early in the shot clock just so they could jack up bad shots late in the shot clock. However, the flip side is that Gannon is not playing defense at the level it played under JR. The key for Gannon will continue to be whether Gannon can make shots. Ironically, the guys that are producing for Gannon are JR's experienced guys - Webb and Cisero. Jefferson will be getting his first taste of Manchell, who knows how to pick at weak spots. Manchell does not have the offensive talent he had last year, so he will grind Gannon to the bone with his switching defense and his patience on O. Coaches are shadowing Gannon's only consistent perimeter threat in Clancy, who can't beat people off the dribble. Expect more of the same from Manchell. A good recipe for a Gannon loss would be for Gannon to play run and gun and miss shots while Manchell grinds them to the bone with patience on O.

This is the most important week of the season for UPJ. If UPJ wants to compete for #2 seed in the West, these are must wins v Hurst and SRU at UPJ.

I really like Cal U. If Sancomb could get them to play better D, they have the kind of team that can beat anyone except IUP, which is going to win the West going away and probably the conference 'ship even without the injured Big guy.

Very confusing resume. Can't begin to tell where he's played and for how long. Connections to SALEM and DELAWARE STATE as well as a number of AAU teams.
These are the type of players Clarion would be routinely getting if Gary Cooper Jr would have gotten the head coaching job at Clarion.

Wow!!! Of course a team isn't going to play has good of defense when you are playing run and gun! Obviously, you're going to give up more transition points! Obviously, you are giving your opponent more offensive possessions! That's just the start!!! The uneducated basketball people... YIKES!!!

Gannon's 72.5 pts/game this season is hardly "run and gun" and ranks Gannon as #16 out of 18 PSAC teams on offense, right above lowly Seton Hill. Gannon is getting and shooting better shots this year - its overall team shooting percentage is 5% higher this year (45% in 2019-20) than last year (40% in 2018-19) with the same basic roster. If Gannon played defense at the level it played last year, when it gave up just 62.4 pts/game (2nd in the PSAC), Gannon would be having a pretty good year scoring 72.5 pts/game while giving up 62.4 pts/game.

There are dozens of successful teams who can score and play defense. IUP to name one of them.

Under JR in 2018-19, Gannon scored 62.4 pts/game and gave up 64.5 pts/game.

Under Jefferson in 2019-20 so far, Gannon is averaging 72.5 pts/game and giving up 73.8 pts/game.

          Not much net difference.

Defend JR all you want - he's a great defensive coach. But his teams struggled on offense unless he had guys like a Zay Jackson who could score on their own.

IUPALUM, I need to get better educated. If only I had your basketball IQ!

Never like to break up a good fight, so please continue ... but I do like a good stat crunch.

I like to see how a team is performing against teams on different levels. It tells a better story.

So, looking at Gannon's body of work this season:

Against top-level teams, Gannon is 0-4 and losing by an average score of 78.5 to 65.5. (If you wanted to remove the Bonnies, it becomes losing 79.66 to 70.66)

            West Chester (72-67 home loss)
            UPJ (82-81 road loss)
            IUP (85-64 home loss)
St. Bonaventure (75-50 road D1 loss) Note: Apparently GU is counting this game in its overall record and statistics.

Against mid-tier teams, Gannon is 2-3 and losing by an average score of 77.0 to 74.2

Ashland (81-76 home loss) Note: Ashland was No. 11 when they played GU. However, today they are 7-8 overall.
            Bowie State (66-53 road loss)
            Millersville (71-62 home win)
            Kutztown (92-82 road loss OT)
            Bloomsburg (89-84 road win)

Against low-level teams (based on their current record), GU is 4-0 and winning by an average of 77.25 to 65.25

            Alderson Broaddus (81-74 home win)
            Mansfield (74-67 road win)
            Edinboro (79-59 home win)
            Seton Hill (75-61 home win)

Overall this season: GU 72.5 ppg Opponents: 73.8 ppg
Overall last season: GU 62.4 ppg Opponents: 64.5 ppg

So, GU is scoring 10 more a game but also giving up 10 more a game. Thus, the 6-6 record against D2 competition (6-7 overall).

For historical comparison against Gannon's last two good teams:

2014-15 PSAC Champion GU: 63.3 ppg Opponents 56.6 ppg
2017-18 NCAA Tournament GU: 71.3 ppg Opponents 65.9 ppg

Against D2 teams this season, Gannon's offense has been held in the 60s or less in 3 of 12 games - all against traditionally strong defensive teams (WCU, IUP and Bowie State)

In what used to be an exciting rivalry, the VULCANS have clearly not held up their end recently. They've lost 11 straight even though the five games @ KCAC have usually been good games with the C'HAWKS winning by an average of 13 pts. But the the last W for CAL U was memorable because it was @ KCAC, on Saturday January 18 2014, against the #5 ranked team in the country, before a nice crowd of 2141 by a score of 59-54. Guaranteed that will not be the score this week.....but, who knows.

              • Just a suggestion on stats. IMHO, points scored can be misleading based on the style of the game (uptempo or half-court deliberate). IMHO points per possession is a better indicator. The range of Pts per possession for both teams in a game will give an indication of good games or bad games (offensively or defensively). From obaservation if team is < 1.0, then it will be hard to win against good teams. If team is > 1.15 then they are playing well enough to win against many teams. One can caculate this stat from the box score. Google the formula if interested.

This is a PSAC thread. We see things differently than you southerners. Lol. We look more at points allowed than points scored. Very different leagues.

Fairmont scored 112 in a game and LOST this year. That would get a coach canned up here.

That is the beauty of points per possession. It is independent of the style of play. It measures how efficient you are with each possession.
You could have a points per possession of 1.20 and only score 60 points, because you have fewer possessions.
On the other hand, hypothetically Fairmont might score 112 and only have .95 points per possession, which is not really good. If the opponent averages 1.20 per possession, Fairmont loses.
if a team was averaging 1.2 points per possession and you hold them to ,90, then your defense probably had something to do with it.
That is what I like about the stat.

                    • Game Day. Not an overall stellar lineup tonight, but there are a couple nice games.

Mercyhurst at UPJ - Big one in Johnstown tonight. A UPJ win keeps them in the mix for the West top spot -- and deals the Lakers a huge blow. A Mercyhurst win gets the Lakers right back in the race. Both teams have a tough week. UPJ hosts Slippery Rock in a couple days. Mercyhurst hosts rival Gannon. UPJ, to the surprise of some, has actually dominated this series as of late -- winning 6 of the past 7 meetings. The Mountain Cats have won their past 6 outings, although four of them haven't been real pretty. Last week, UPJ defeated Edinboro and Clarion by a combined 6 points. Mercyhurst is coming off an 86-64 beat-down of Kutztown. Tough game to call. UPJ usually finds a way at home, and its odd offense seems to be a good match-up against Mercyhurt's odd defense. Mountain Cats -3

Gannon at Clarion - This trip down 79 comes at a perfect time for Gannon. Coming off a rough ending against IUP, and with a trip across town looming, tonight should be a good opportunity to get back on track. The Golden Eagles have lost 6 straight. The positive is they just about pulled a shocker in their last outing, losing a tight, 67-64, contest to UPJ. That's the positive. The negative is prior to the UPJ game, Clarion played Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst -- two teams built like GU -- and got run out of the gym in both games. Expect a GU romp tonight. Golden Knights -15

East Stroudsburg at Shepherd - The battle of allegedly deceivingly strong teams. The Warriors travel to Shepherdstown as losers of 3 straight. The Rams have lost 4 in a row. One losing streak will end tonight. Despite a 6-9 record, Shepherd has been competitive in nearly every game. ESU also plays a more MEC style compared to the rest of the PSAC. The Rams should be used to being pressed all night and may thrive in a fast-paced affair. ESU is 2-3 away from home this season. Shepherd is 5-3 in their building. This should be a really fun game to watch. Very tough call. Shepherd's inability to close out games once again will be the issue. ESU leaves town with a tight, hard-fought win. Warriors -3

West Chester at Lock Haven - On paper, this is a total mismatch. However, in Lock Haven, it may be closer than some think. West Chester is coming off a shaky road-trip, albeit a 79-71 win at Mansfield. With the exception of IUP, Lock Haven has played everybody tough -- including narrow losses against SRU, California and UPJ. WCU has won the past four meetings by an average of about 13 points. That sounds about right for tonight. Rams -13

IUP at Edinboro - The PIAA D-10 Tour continues for the D-10 heavy Crimson Hawks. McComb Field House should feel a bit like the KCAC tonight for the visitors. IUP walloped the Fighting Scots in both meetings a year ago. Expect Edinboro guards Anthony Coleman and Jaryn Simpson to get their points, but the Boro lacks the depth to take this one a full 40 minutes. Perhaps it's close for a half, but IUP pulls away in the final 20 minutes. Trey Staunch and Dante Lombardi should take a picture together. IUP -19

Millersville at Slippery Rock - This is a sneaky good game between two sneaky good teams. Don't let the records fool you. Both teams dealt with some issues in November and December. Millersville makes the long trip as winners of three straight. SRU is 2-2 in its past four but was very close to being 4-0 (including near misses in Morrow against Cal and IUP). These teams play very different styles. The Mauraders will try and speed up the pace. Slippery Rock is deadly in a slow-down game. He who sets the pace tonight ... wins tonight. SRU is historically tough in Morrow (for a variety of reasons). Rock wins a tight one. SRU -2

California at Seton Hill - Unless the Vulcans are already mentally in Indiana, this is a curb-stomp. Seton Hill will be out-manned at every position. The ladies' game is the main attraction tonight in Greensburg. The men's game will be ugly. California -21

Bloomsburg at Shippensburg - If the Huskies are anything ... they are a sporadic bunch. They'll put up a fight tonight but will lack the horses to pull off an upset. Shippensburg is due for a down game but it won't be in this one. Red Raiders -11

Mansfield at Kutztown - The Golden Bears return home after two brutal road games a week ago. Kutztown got blasted at both Millersville and Mercyhurst. The good news is they have a winning record at home. The Mounties have lost 3 straight, although have shown glimpses of being a decent team (at times). Flip a coin. Kutztown -2

Tonight was pretty interesting. Our old pal, Gary M., went up to Johnstown and got a huge win. That's the type of road win that could really get them going. It also sets up a big one this Saturday night in the booze-fueled MAC.

Slippery Rock ... same thing. That comeback win tonight over a pretty solid Millersville paired with close losses to Cal and IUP ... this could really spark them.

Out East, if you were watching Lock Haven ... you could tell they were on the verge of a big upset. Minus their flop at the KCAC, they had played everybody tough despite 5-6 very close loses. Great win for the Bald Eagles tonight.

Kutztown -2
I don't know about being due for a down game, but Ship wasn't exactly hitting on all cylinders against East Stroud, especially in the first half, and managed to pull it out.
