Fundraising is part of the problem but I don't assign blame to Cleary. Boro has over $200k of salary dedicated to two guys for athletic fundraising. There's a misconception among Edinboro athletes and athlete alumni that the AD has a pool of money and "gives" the sports their money. If athlete alumni don't know how Edinboro funds athletic scholarships they won't be encouraged to step up.

I mentioned it before Edinboro's enrollment has creeped toward 67% women. IUP dedicates the vast majority of its men's scholarship dollars on football and basketball. They starve out the other men's programs. Edinboro has football, basketball, and wrestling taking up men's scholarship dollars - and in the last few years there's been a surge of donations for cross country.

That's just a lack of quality depth. Coleman returning will help a ton. He was understandably rusty last night after missing 6-8 weeks.

Around the West:

* Clarion missed a golden opportunity last night at SRU. The Golden Eagles had every chance to take over that game. That said, the Rock win all but officially set the West field for the PSAC Tournament.

* The two Erie schools should both cruise again Saturday ... setting up a massive showdown in the Hammermill next Wednesday night. It certainly looks like -- as of today, anyway, that these two neighbors could meet again in Round 1. Next Wednesday will go along way in determining which part of Erie that game is played.

* Seton Hill put up a good fight against Mercyhurst last night -- for a half. The Griffins trailed by just 4 points at the break. Then, of course, they scored just 15 points the rest of the way.

* As expected, Cal's visit to Johnstown was an exciting affair. The game took many turns. The first 10 minutes it appeared Cal was going to run UPJ out of the building. The Vulcans put on a massive three-point barrage. Coach Rukavina switched to a zone and UPJ completely took over the game for the next 20 minutes. The final 10 minutes, Cal went in to a devastating press and UPJ really struggled with it. The Vulcans cut it all the way down to 5 points but couldn't get closer. Call it a hunch but these two may play a Round 3 ... in Round 2.

* Aside from SRU at IUP, this Saturday's West schedule is very weak. The other games are likely to all be blowouts.

* IUP has a two-game lead on UPJ, but is far from a lock to get the No. 1 seed. Four tough games await -- although 3 of them will be in the KCAC.

My positive takeaway is that the box score says there were 1,200+ there last night. 15 years ago they'd push 1,000 on the weekends and 600+ on weeknights. Adding Gannon and Mercyhurst to the annual schedule helps quite a bit.

The second half has been their kryptonite all season. Omitting the game against DIII Thiel and the exhibition against DI Cleveland State, they average being down by 6 at the half which is usually not too concerning and able to overcome - but the second halfs add on a -9 scoring margin. Gotta figure that out.

Edinboro was 5/35 from the field in second half despite making a meaningless three at the buzzer. Coleman shot 2/12 in his return. Not to be outdone, Simpson was 0/12 from the field. Gannon held the duo to a combined seven points.

He is a good player. He could be a much better player with talent around him -- and not having to be the whole focal point.

Maybe but doubtful... his ego wants to be the center of attention and let us not forget that he can't defend a lick either.

Cal now down 58-43. This feels like a bigger collapse than they had at the KCAC.

In the end they made it respectable but still an L. Now a week to think about it until the C'HAWKS come to town !!
