  • Performance Indicators 2016-17

Back by popular demand. Same as last year. Check out the midwest thread for more details on how I get these numbers if you are new to the forum. If you see anything that looks like a mistake, please let me know and I'll get it fixed. Just a reminder, only NCAA Division II games count in these records. And the Puerto Rican teams are excluded, as well as teams in Year One of transitioning to D2.

Shnautza...Surprised no one, including me, picked it up last week...but Fairmont beat Wheeling Jesuit...So WJ should have a loss...and I would suspect Fairmont would be ahead of WJ, subsequently... check it out...

Wow, I'm not sure what happened to that row in my sheet - must have either mistakenly deleted it while purging out the non-D2 games or it was missing from my source at the time of my copy/paste. Either way, good catch and keep checking for more errors! Thanks!

This puts the top 3 in a dead-even race right now.

I know. I'm sorry I wasn't implying anything. It's neat to watch as they do eventually get pretty close to the polls.

No offense taken, I knew exactly what you meant. There are a few teams in the midwest that are rated higher than expected as well. Time will tell if they are any good.

                  Re: Performance Indicators 2016-17

One question. I notice these don't include 'Non D2 games'

How are 'Non D2 games' viewed in the grand scheme of things? For instance, Shippensburg opened with two garbage freebies versus Penn State branch campuses (and several others in the PSAC are playing these trash freebies, too).

You look at an IUP playing Fairmont this Monday or Wheeling playing Mercyhurst ... just as examples ... those are real games against real opponents. Obviously they help your opponents' winning percentage, etc.

So, do these D3-type opponents or JUCO opponents (whatever they even are) do anything for these teams other than make their overall records appear better?

I would love to see the PSAC ban such games. Nearly every one of them has a 40+ point margin. The stats should get thrown out of the conference leaders, too.

Not everybody in the PSAC plays these games but there are several habitual offenders. These 'stat games' drastically throw off scoring races, etc.

Slippery Rock is AGAIN playing Ohio University Northern 8th Grade team TWICE this year.

Getting back to the main topic here ... do teams (grand scheme) get any benefit scheduling these automatic wins? If not, why do they continue to do it ... other than for having a faux record?

I've asked about these games and been told that finding non-conference games is getting just as difficult as for football so they're stuck playing DIII. Edinboro has been playing Thiel for several years. I'd like to see them play Allegheny and Behrend.

                      Re: Performance Indicators 2016-17

Doesn't that seem hard to believe to you? There are so many D2 basketball teams. If you lump WV and Ohio in to the 'Northeast' ... tons and tons of teams.

I can see Edinboro playing one game. You guys are on the 79 strip of D3 schools up there.

But ... do the D3 games actually count for anything come Regional Invitation time? IUP plays a tough non-conference schedule every year -- no D3's and generally 1-2 'high profile' games. It backfired last year early. Had they played a few of these cupcakes the record would have been much different.

Games against D3 (Thiel, Allegheny, Grove City), NAIA (Point Park) or any other non-D2 school (most Penn State 'satellite campuses') do not count towards D2 regional rankings in any sport.

The NCAA did crack down on the 'College of Faith' type of 'fake' schools for statistical purposes, but I think it'll be a tougher sell to do the same for USCAA schools (ie. the Penn State-Beavers, etc.). I am surprised that games against Ohio Regional Campus Conferences (ie. OU-Eastern, Wright State-Lake, etc.) are countable, even though most of those schools are not even part of the USCAA, let alone the NAIA or NCAA.

Not sure how the NCAA views the non-D2 games, but you can understand why they are factored out of this formula, which is supposedly one of the criteria that may be used for tourney selection.
