Tom has added a mid-year player (from the Volleyball program). Grace Mangapora was a 1,000-point scorer at Canfield High (Ohio) ... averaged 16 ppg as a senior. She will have freshman eligibility in basketball.

IUP shut down all basketball activity for 14 days due to Covid protocols. That long of a shutdown would sure seem to mean they had quite the outbreak.
Tom's going to go (as of now) from Dec. 19 to Jan. 15 without a game. That's an incredibly long time away mid-season.
The only thing they can probably do during this stretch is have Zoom meetings.
And, most importantly, this assumes all recover fully.
Assuming the ladies do all come back healthy (and clear protocols), their first game back is against Gannon. That's not going to be easy coming off that long away.

The ladies had a nice bounce back yesterday. Courtney Alexander set a new school record with (9) treys.

Tom lost 67-58 ... and it wasn't nearly as close as the final score.
Rams are really good. Great PG. Great Forward. And, IUP couldn't hit the side of a barn most of the day.

I'm interested to see how they do Saturday against a team that can punch back.
Tom's teams are typically extremely clean with the ball, etc. This group seems to have long stretches of really sloppy play. They've been dominating two quarters a game and looking pretty average the other two quarters.
Most teams tend to get sloppy in blowouts and just about every game so far has been a runaway. But, again, the competition hasn't been too hot.
I don't follow them too closely other than reading the recaps and looking at the boxscore. I may have to check this one out Saturday ... 9-0 vs 9-0 is a cool match-up.

Tom improved to 7-0 last night. After a slow start, IUP exploded in the third quarter.
Courtney Alexander went off again, finishing with 28 points (including 8 treys).

The big news out of yesterday's win at Ohio Dominican was that senior guard Courtney Alexander looked like she was able to put the past ACL injury behind her. She went for a career-high 24 points including (5) treys. These were her first games back and she said in the Gazette she was still pretty hesitant through the first five outings.
She's one of the deadliest sharpshooters in the Region and her getting back to form drastically changes how teams must defend IUP -- and how Tom can run the offense.
PG Maria Cerro looks as if she's taken a giant step since her true freshman year back in '19. She's been very strong on both ends.
The West has some outstanding women's teams again this year.
So far:
Cal - 4-0
IUP - 6-0
Gannon - 4-0
Slippery Rock - 5-1
Seton Hill - 5-3
Edinboro - 2-1
Seton Hill played in the D2CCA Tipoff Classic. One of its losses was against a team from Canada so I don't think that one actually figures in to anything down the road. The Griffins also lost a game there against a D2 Top 10 team. I suspect they will also be in the mix down the stretch. Edinboro is always good and it looks like SRU is playing well, too.
