  • PSAC Tournament changing format

Surprised no one has discussed the changes to basketball tournament format in the PSAC? Or have I not dug in enough to threads?

I'm so glad to see we're crossing divisions before the semifinals. The East in women's field is not impressive. I'll be very curious if Lock can lock it up to host still. I'm excited about the change!

You didn't dig far enough. It's been talked about for a few weeks now.

I see both sides of it. I'm a bit of a traditionalist that the tournament should be East vs West, but I guess if they're going to count crossover games for the conference record, why not.

I'm a fan of seeding the actual tournament starting in Round 1.

No East/West. Seed it 1-12. Wherever the chips fall they fall.

I also am not a fan of rotating East/West for the Final Four weekend. Top remaining seed should always host.

Top seed this years means Gannon would be hosting 4 games Saturday and 2 on Sunday. It'd be the PSAC regional.

If schedules were more balanced I'd be a fan of that. But imbalanced play with cross division could have some weird impact on overall ranking. That said I hate the divisions overall so meh I probably could be sold now.

IUP could have beat Cal on Wednesday and made it a non issue 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have no problem with that seeding system, but the hosting would be an issue for some schools. For example, Slippery Rock has just 2 winter sports: basketball & indoor track. Women's basketball is done for the year, so theoretically Morrow Fieldhouse would be available on a moment's notice to host. But for schools that also have swimming or wrestling or in Edinboro's case, wheelchair basketball, the arena/fieldhouse isn't just sitting there or the staff who run the venue may already be committed to other events. Some of the consolidated campuses are down to barebones staffing. McComb is also a major venue for high school basketball in D10, so that may be an issue as well considering staffing. I know, excuses, excuses.

Would IUP reschedule the PA Taxidermy Convention at the KCAC so it could host?

Not saying it was an issue. The PSAC probably wouldn't want a site hosting both or they'd probably be already doing it.

Honestly don't think that's true at all. Far less administrative burden to have it all at one site.

This change had a pretty significant impact in women's soccer, in which there are no regular-season cross-divisional games and the divisional double round robin doesn't leave much room for non-conference games.

The East won all four quarterfinals. Bloomsburg, who'd been left out of the last regional rankings (9 places) before selections after losing to Millersville in the first round of the PSAC tournament, got enough of an SOS boost that they jumped all the way to 5th in final selections without playing a game in between.

I think a home school should be rewarded for hosting if they earn the regular season crown, but otherwise make sure it is a neutral site. Not a fan of the top seed NOT hosting and some other location hosting which is also the home floor of another school.

I had heard that was why they alternated. Many schools host outside events (which bring more money in than basketball) and the majority of schools didnt want to have both tournaments same place so they could schedule outside events and still have wiggle room with games.

Gannon wont care though - excited for the possibility of 6 PSAC games this weekend!
