Re: 2017-18 MIAA Thread
Injuries is a big part. Senior Addie Lackey is out with a ACL injury suffered in the final scrimmage of the preseason four days before the exhibition opener at KU. The morning of the KU game sophomore Daley Handy went down with an ACL in the shoot around. Senior Kyrstie Miller missed almost all of the late summer conditioning and the preseason with a foot injury that they thought would heal but didn't and she underwent surgery to fix a stress fracture.
Lackey was the MIAA Freshman of the Year and has already scored over 1100 points in her first three years. She's also eighth on the Lady Hornet all-time list in made three-pointers. Miller is tenth in career blocked shots at Emporia State and had over 650 points and almost 500 rebounds in her first three years. Handy was an All-State player at Maize HS before going to play D-I at Wyoming.
That's two starters and three scholarship players lost before you play a game. The starting point guard came to Emporia as a GA after graduating from UNO. She had a year of eligibility left but didn't start practicing until the week before the season.
In addition they have and will play the toughest schedule in the nation this year according to the NCAA stats page. Their opponents to date are 207-123 (.627) and when you add in the remaining teams on the schedule they are the only team in the country that will have opponents with a winning percentage of over .600 on the year.
The weird thing is that ESU has swept Pitt State, beat UCO, gave UNK their first loss and beat Washburn when they were 12-1. But they have also lost to LWU, UCM and FHSU by 18 or more points. I think it's a lack of real senior leadership. Jacee Kramer is a four year player but has always been kind of the third option in her own class and last year was probably the fifth option with Moten and Flott on the roster.
After UNK on Saturday, the schedule does lighten up a little bit next week with NWMSU and MWSU coming into White. Then it's Washburn on Senior Night before going to SBU, NSU and UCO to end the season. If ESU goes 5-2 in the final seven games then they would be headed to the MIAA Tourney with an 18-8 record. Not up to Lady Hornet standards but still pretty darn good.
