  • Re: New bellarmine thread

Florida Southern lost its first two games. They actually have a game on Wed. before playing in Evansville on Friday.

Alabama Huntsville won its first two games, one of them was against King, who usually fields a pretty good team.

Still not sure where we stand after this weekend. Not entirely surprised by the results but the St. Joe's scores makes me scratch my head a little bit. They got to play SVSU after their battle with us but it still seems a little strange to me. Overall I don't think it was a bad start, but it is hard to evaluate this team very well after that.

I did not fork over the money to watch them play but from looking at the stats, I think Rusty needs to get more shot attempts. I know the BU offense spreads the ball around and gets everyone a lot of looks, but I don't know that we have the talent across the board to justify Rusty taking less than 10 shots per game. I have liked Eberhard's stat line so far. I think those two should combine for 20+ attempts each game. They are far and away our best scorers and they need to be threats at all times. I would love for Cook to be a consistent third option with Davis distributing the ball and other guards being consistent shooters. I think it will continue to be tough to get an idea of how good this team is until we play more familiar competition

It may be that St. Joe's is just that much better this year. They practically matched BU's efforts this weekend. They were improving last year so maybe they are ready for a good season. Unfortunately I really don't know who they lost and who they picked up this year.

I still think SVSU is the favorite right now for the region. In fact, I think after this weekend I would have to say the GLIAC has several teams looking good. The fact that Lewis and Parkside split games between GLIAC teams which weren't expected to be the best in their conference, shows a weakness in the GLVC. Added to the fact that Quincy got beat by Ferris, it definitely looks like the GLIAC is going to have the upper hand this year. If we were only going on this past weekend's games, USI looks to be the power of the GLVC(ok, EaglePride can have its one big weekend) although they played a crappy Lake Erie and a less than strong Ashland without its leading scorer. Actually I think that set of games just proved that Indy is not very good, yet. I wouldn't count them out though. Lots of new players will take some time to adjust.

After all that I still think BU looks pretty good. They should have beaten SVSU if not for all the unforced turnovers. That is something I no doubt believe will be tended to in the next few games. Rebounding, as is usually the case with BU teams, is a different story. Hopefully, Weyer gets completely healthy and can help to address that issue. In the end, Scotty's teams seem to always have an issue with rebounding but somehow seem to overcome it. I like this team because they do seem to be one unit already. All have good attitudes and have bought into the system. In fact may have over-bought as they seem to want to pass too much without somebody shooting.

And what is the deal with Christian Bros. playing Central State back to back games? Seems odd. They split them with the home team winning each time. Don't know what that will mean for BU when they go to Memphis.

So any BU fans going to Evansville? I might just head there solo for Friday's game, since Moves can't go(who the heck lets his daughter get married on such a big weekend of BU basketball anyway!) Fortunately it looks as though Friday's game will be the better one. I have always been impressed with Huntsville's style of play. Somewhat like BU's. It should be interesting to see how BU stacks up against them. I'll miss Saturday's game (who the heck lets his niece get married on such a big day of BU basketball anyway!) but I'm hoping BU can dispatch Florida Southern easily. Would have liked to see the USI-KWC madness.

Considering Scotty's record, his decisions about playing time and starters are by definition correct. I feel compelled to express my own wrong opinion. There is absolutely no reason not to be starting Cook(over Knott) on Friday and for the rest of the season. Worst case is it is a wash and the net to the team is zero for the season. Even if that is the case, the benefit of playing the freshman more than the senior is for the coming three seasons. Players have to play in games to get better, and the more they play, the better they get. Players who are four year starters for Bellarmine end up All-Americans. Starting is not necessary the key, but as far as minutes played, I'd like to see a complete flop between Cook and Knott. BTW, I love Knott and he can help this team by giving some valuable, albeit limited, minutes off the bench.

A guy who deserves some atta boys for the first two games is Jared Coles. Really nice balanced stat line. Like him as the first guard off the bench at this point.

I agree with you to a point. I think Knott will continue to start but Cook will end up with more minutes. I think Scotty feels he has to reward the senior who btw does everything possible to retain that loyalty. Letting him be the starter is not really hurting anything. He holds his own weight out there. Cook is the better talent and the future. He will get more of the overall playing time. I think bringing him off the bench, as long as he likes it, helps in that it brings in a fresh scorer to relieve Troutman and Eberhard a little.

Totally agree about Coles. He has looked really good and in control. I forsee him starting next year along Jenkins, Cook, Weyer and Eberhard. Coles will not be a weak link in that strong lineup either.

One thing that should be mentioned, but is obvious, is that the team is very short handed right now. With Weyer and Ramser hurt and out for an indefinite period, and Nick Fredrick leaving the team, there is simply not a lot left on the bench, especially in the front court. I am surprised at how little Scotty played Taylor. I am sure that he has a lot of developing to do, but its not like the competition has had a bunch of really good big guys.

I agree that Cook long-term is the guy and he should get playing time accordingly, but I do think there is something to be said for Knott keeping the starting role at least for a while. He's a senior captain and having all three captains on the floor to start the game sets a good tone for guys coming off the bench. I also think it takes a little bit of pressure off of Cook coming off of the bench because it lets him build a little confidence before getting a chance at starting. Scotty is hard on his guys and throwing a freshman into the fire can be dangerous. I think for the first several games Knott starting is probably a good thing for the team but agree Cook should start in the long-run. In fact, Troutman didn't start as a freshman until halfway through the season and that clearly didn't hurt his development too much so I don't see it hurting Cook to spend some time on the bench.

I feel the same way a bout Coles. He is enough of a threat to score, passes the ball really well, and guards the heck out of people. He's the solid player you like coming off of the bench.

I'm not saying he is all-American or anything but I think Taylor has looked decent out there when he gets to play. I agree, that with the team being short handed I think he should be seeing more time. Scotty must have a reason though. Could be something in practice that Taylor is not picking up yet.

The reason has been stated before: Taylor has a foot problem. In the month leading up to the exhibitions, he developed a blister that became infected and has been slow to heal. That affected his conditioning. As his foot heals and his conditioning improves he will see more minutes and will be a big part of the team as the season wears on.

Davenport should quit taking the free cheap shoes and buy good ones. Two foot problems this year.

Ha! That is a good one! I do find it interesting that the two guys who were most involved in preseason training came down with foot injuries. They lost 60 pounds between the two of them. I would have thought that the weight loss would have prevented these stress related injuries. But of course I'm a lawyer not a doctor and I didn't stay at a Holiday Express lately.
