Looks like I was exactly right about the margin of 9 points, almost hit the score. I thought Bellarmine would give them everything they could handle. From what I understand, Cronin tried to get out of Cincinnati after last season and could have gone to UNLV, but things broke down in negotiations with them. Then Cincinnati's president abruptly resigned with the school facing massive budgetary problems. A disenchanted head coach in Division I can not be a good thing for a program, especially one such as Cincinnati. Congratulations to Bellarmine for playing a fine game.

A new, quick, student-produced profile of Jenkins:

Looks closely in the opening seconds, and you'll see Kendle out there practicing with the squad.

Watching the KWC / UL exhibition game on ESPN3 and seeing that Derksen still shoots virtually every time he touches the ball, plays no defense and does not attack the boards confirms that he would not fit with this year's Bellarmine team. The tallest player on the KWC team he played 12 min and had 1 rebound and 5 pts in first half. All his points are scored on 2 straight possessions where he shot 4 times making 2

The teamwork, passing, rebounding and defense displayed last night by the BU team stand in stark contrast to the BU team we saw last year. While Derk was not the only issue with last year's team, his style of play is emblematic of the problems last year's team had.

Not the best performance by our guys tonight, but there's no shame in losing by 20+ to the 11th-ranked D-I team at their historic place. Don't really keep up with D-I hoops anymore, but I think IU will be really good.

Could've been a little more interesting, like last year in the second half at Assembly Hall, if some of those open shots (that we normally hit) fell. Have to say the Hoosiers played some tough defense, and that can get in guys' heads and play mental games on the shooters.

I'm liking Taylor. One positive is that, while we got killed on the boards in the first half, I heard we outrebounded Indiana in the second.

Will be interesting to see how things go at Louisville on Monday. Will have to be at that one in spirit.

Ok, I have to admit that besides a few minutes on the radio while in the car I did not see or hear much of the game. Do I have to turn in my BU fan decoder ring and cape? I think Moves was going to disclaim me after I said I couldn't go! Going tonight though. I think BU will get hammered tonight. Pitino is likely to unleash the dogs the first 20 minutes before easing slightly for Davenport's sake.

Saw Weyer and Taylor with the fitness coach at Kroger yesterday. They were in the snack aisle getting a lecture on the proper snacks to get. I trolled around eavesdropping to see if I could get any scoop on Weyer and his foot. Didn't hear anything but he was walking without any issues. I know he was listed in the box score for Saturday so maybe he is pretty much ready. Be interesting to see if he plays more tonight. Btw, do I get my BU Basketball Geek title back for making a celebrity sighting? I am a geek though, more excited about seeing them than I would be about some so-called celebrity who may make millions from singing.

We'll let it slide this time, since you are such a gentleman and a scholar.

Totally agree. Think it's going to be ugly. Seems to me that, when the Knights play these three big-time D-I exhibitions, there's a close one, a so-so one, and one where BU alas gets pounded. One of these years, I think Bellarmine will knock off U of L, but this ain't it.

That, sir, is good stuff; I'd be excited too. I know Scotty has talked about how Taylor (and maybe some of the other guys too) are so into it that they send Hartman photos of what they are about to eat. It's worked for Taylor. What's he lost now? Close to thirty pounds?

Can't wait to see Weyer in action. Hope he's ready to go soon.

I'll be at the U of L game tonight. One of my sons got his boss's season ticket seats (pretty good ones!). Not expecting to seriously threat the Cards tonight but I would like to see a good showing. Why in the living bejesus does UK play Asbury? There are plenty of D2/D3/NAIA teams in the state they could play that would present a better scrimmage. I do appreciate the fact that Asbury is getting a pay check for the game...how about Transy?

Cool. Have fun. We'll expect a full report. ;)

I think UK played at least a couple of exhibitions against Transy in the not-too-distant past, but they do seem to play Asbury a lot. I suppose they play Clarion because that is Calipari's alma mater.

                    Re: New bellarmine thread

Totally ugly first half. No one wanted to shoot the ball until eventually Rusty shot (and missed) or they threw away the ball. Looked like deer in the headlights. Second half much much better. But then again when a team is up by over 30 points in the first half there is a tendency to relax a little. George Knott has earned more playing time given his second half performance. Coles didn't look good until the last 8 minutes when he relaxed and started taking some shots which went in. Jenkins looked good 2nd half as did Eberhard and Rusty was much better. Looked to me like Jenkins, Davis, Troutman, Eberhard, Knott was the best combo out there. Although if Coles could shoot like he did the last 5-10 minutes, he deserves to play. U of L only outrebounded the Knights 37-34 but then again, in the first half I don't think U of L missed a shot so there were fewer rebounds for them to chase down. Cards height and length discouraged our guys from slashing to the basket since it was usually blocked in their face. Second half however, then did manage some back door cuts and nifty layups along with some steals and transition baskets. In the end it was respectful - I think they outscored U of L by 11 points the second half. Not bad. Its hard to get that god awful first half out of my mind however. I had seats about 15 rows up from the floor under the basket where Dan Ramser got knocked cold. He was definitely knocked unconscious - I could see him motionless on the floor with his eyes closed for a minute or two. I think he got knocked in the side of the head with an elbow going up to contest a layup. They carried him off on a stretcher. Hope he's ok.

I think you are correct about over passing. I never thought there would be such a thing but the passing allowed U of L to settle in and no good shots were to be had. We are all going to go crazy when we see U of L shoot 1 for 20 threes in there first game.

                      • As Scotty said in his post-game presser, the difference in the second half was attacking the UL press. When a team presses, you must attack or you just become part of the feeding frenzy. Of the 16 turnovers in the first half, only about a half dozen were forced. Many were simple carelessness and/or a young team that is still not totally in sync. Had we played the same in the first half as we did in the second, we still would have lost by 12.

I agree that we passed up too many good shots in all three exhibition games. We should be encouraged by the team's persistence and ability to be coached. We will not face any team this year as tough as the 3 we just played. By the way, Scotty mentioned that Saginaw Valley played their exhibitions against Michigan State and Butler. I expect a good game on Friday night. The team finished on an uptick and carry that momentum into Friday's game.

Finally, Scotty reported during the press conference (video is available on the CJ website) that Ramser is fine. The CT scans were clear. He initially had some memory issues but it was starting to come back. He will be out for a while as they follow the concussion protocol.

Yes that first half was so bad I had to get up and get a $9 bud light (yuck) with 4 or 5 minutes still to go(of course Yum is the biggest sports bar in college athletics.) I did not think Rusty looked good at all, even in the 2nd half. Knott looked like the All-American out there in the 2nd half. Hitting 3s, rebounding, making moves under the basket, he was doing it all. I don't know how much of that was UofL just slacking off because they were up 30 or if it was George just feeling it. UofL definitely laid off their defensive intensity in the second half, but it was good to see BU start to warm up.

I think the starting lineup is Davis, Troutman, Knott, Eberhard and Jenkins/Coles. If it is based on last night I think Coles. However, I think taking all 3 exhibition games together, Scotty is leaning towards Jenkins.

I do hope Ramser is ok. Our seats were on that end of the floor but I did not see what happened. I imagine he has a concussion and will be out a couple of weeks at least. You never know with those kind of things. Just ask KWC fans.

I saw a number of occasions when Davis or Jenkins or Cole ran the ball up the court after breaking the press and at the top of the key it appeared to me they had an open lane to drive for the basket in the first half. Every time they stopped and picked up their dribble and started their offensive scheme. I am all for passing the ball and running your offense but when the other team presses and you break the press and have a path to the basket, why not go for it. You may get it blocked in your face (especially with a team like U of L) but you may also draw defenders to you and allow you to dish it off to a teammate who gets an easy bucket. That is precisely what they did on a number of occasions in the second half. Also agree that Knott was not (how do you like that phrase?) intimidated by the Cards in the second half. He was relaxed and not afraid to go for it.

One other comment with regard to the $9 beers. I had one plus a $5.50 pretzel. With all of the stink about the YUM center having trouble making their debt service payments, does U of L get the profits from the concesssions? Or does the YUM center? If the YUM center gets some $ from the concessions, what would it take to get them on more solid financial footing? $15 beers??
