So football moving up to FBS doesn't seem so likely.

I can’t speak for Sac State’s priorities or past behavior but just looking at the list:

Men’s soccer has been a fairly frequent cut at schools for budget or Title IX reasons; wouldn’t surprise me if that was one of the casualties. On the women’s side you could consolidate the two volleyball programs. I understand they’re different sports given the arenas and team size but they’re probably similar enough that an AD looking to save could conclude it’s not worth both.

Alternatively they could keep all their sports and cut staff somewhere like Indiana (Bloomington, not Pennsylvania) recently did.

Probably not. I can't help but laugh at the Pac7 or whatever number they're at now.

They haven't announced any plans to start a football program, but they did acquire Spartan Municipal Stadium about 6 months back, which was famously the home stadium of the Detroit Lions waaaaaay back in the 1930s when they were still the Portsmouth Spartans. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Shawnee State is located in Portsmouth, Ohio, which is on the Ohio River in South Central Ohio. Most of their road trips in the MEC would be about 3-4 hours (Frostburg would be closer to five hours) while their nearest rival in the GLVC would be UIndy (3.5 hours), followed by Lewis in Joliet, Ill. (6.5 hours, if Chicagoland traffic cooperates).

The only public school to be part of the G-MAC was Central State before they moved to the SIAC in 2015 (UVA-Wise was technically part of the G-MAC, but left in 2013 to join the MEC).

Considering that Sonoma State is about to eliminate D2 sports altogether, I can't say I'm shocked at the news coming out of Sacramento State. The entire Cal State system seems to have budget problems (and I'd suspect the UC system is in a similar situation).

              • Division I Cleveland State is cutting wrestling, women's golf and softball due to budget issues.

Indeed the G-MAC is not going to take public schools. It is one of their primary objectives

Shawnee State going to the GLVC would be absurd. The Mountain East would be a better fit.

UCLA has an athletic budget deficit north of $20 million to further affirm the Cal State system needs a complete overhaul.

But, at least UCLA is supposed to get all that B1G money, so they should be okay. Cal (comma) Berkeley, probably not so much, since I don't think they're getting as much $$$ from the ACC.

This article was from a year ago. Seems like a lot of money to make up.

I'm concerned that my alma mater (San Jose State University) is next on the chopping block. Hope not.

There is a TON of public schools in California. At some point I would think there will be contrition, but being the government I doubt they are not going to kill any of those jobs, especially in that state.

Even Big Ten money isn't going to make up all of UCLA's deficit. But they are in a better place than Cal in terms of potential revenue for athletics, that is for sure. Still, it shows the stupidity of flying sports team all over the country, even the non-revenue sports. Need conference regionalization. If money was shared equally that would probably happen. But greed gets in the way of that.

                            • Expect a LOT more of these types of lawsuits as colleges and universities try and cut athletic programs. From the D1's who just want to cater to football and/or basketball, to NAIA schools just trying to survive, and everything in between.

In addition to men's volleyball, the GLVC will also begin sponsoring stunt as a sport starting next year, becoming (I believe) the second D2 conference to sponsor it after the G-MAC. Sponsoring members will be Drury, Lewis, Maryville, Quincy, and Southwest Baptist, plus East Stroudsburg as an affiliate. I've heard that Ferris State will also be joining as a stunt affiliate too, but I can't confirm that.
