I think part of what's hurt our schools in the past is that we were primarily teachers' colleges until relatively recently, which didn't lead to a lot of high-income alums. Also, people would say why support a state school sinces taxes already do so. There was some truth to that argument when 60-70 percent of the budget was covered by state money — not so much now that the support has dropped below 25 percent at many schools.

Here's a funny one: I NEVER get calls from IUP asking for money anymore. I used to get blown up several times a month. I haven't got a call in at least 3-4 years.

I still send Tort and Joe a yearly donation but even they aren't 'asking' for it.

So, it's hard for the school to get donations if they aren't soliciting them.

It's hard for me to fathom these schools don't have a full-time position for an athletic fundraiser.

Don’t get me started. IUP’s compliance officer hasn’t returned my email from May 10 about something I wanted to support for an athletic program not named men’s basketball or football that sure could use the help. Apparently everything else she’s doing is more important. Waiting on the AD for something else since early April. Guess how inclined I’ll be to support IUP for anything going forward since apparently they don’t need it. Just about all of my experience with the administration has been a disaster, and that’s hard to admit as someone who lives here and got my first degree there.

Now that you say that, I haven't received a call in years for donations either. Weird, for how bad the state schools are financially you'd think they'd be on the phones calling.

          I got calls last winter.

The number of them have decreased though.

Now I get emails. Lots and lots of emails and a few mailers.

That's weird you don't get calls since obviously you've donated there. Ship has a student calling campaign in the fall and if you've ever donated to a fund there you can be sure you'll get a brochure or a follow-up call about it next year. As you say, you're usually not going to get money without asking for it.

As Nation said, I still get the occasional mailers but the calls have gone away. It's been years. I'm not just talking athletic calls ... I don't get any from the academic side, either.

Believe me, it doesn't break my heart, but it is odd.
