Re: Iup basketball
Fancy record. Lofty ranking. Big winning streak.
But, is this team for real? Is it a legitimate regional or national title contender?
Last night was a painful game to watch. For, say, 33 of the 40 minutes, IUP looked anything but a 25-2 team. The usual suspects came back -- circus passes, playing out of control, failed alley-oops, running out of bounds under the basket several times. Twenty turnovers on the night. Luckily, a real bad Clarion happened to be in town. These things could be lived with in early November. When they are still happening in late February, over and over ... a little alarming.
The PSAC West has masked many of these nights for IUP this year. They got by Mercyhurst while committing an ugly 25 turnovers. Clarion last night.
The lights are about to get a whole lot brighter -- and the competition a whole lot stiffer.
Malik Miller has really looked frazzled the past several games. Yes, he's a true freshman. But, they're going to need him down the stretch. He's in the rotation.
On the vast majority of nights since the Fairmont game (the 15 game winning streak), IUP has been its own biggest opponent (and enemy). The team hasn't been challenged much the past two months as evidenced by the slew of blowout victories. Hopefully, with Cal clinging to life, the Vulcans have a big (loud) crowd down there on Saturday. With the trip to West Virginia likely looming, this team could use the experience of playing in a hostile environment.
Maybe a game like last night was just a go-through-the-motions type of night. The scary thing heading in to March is that's it's been this same stuff all year. Lining up against Kutztown and Shippensburg or West Liberty and Fairmont State ... they aren't going to win by simply just having more talent. Twenty-some turnovers against those guys will get your uniforms turned in quickly.
If -- BIG IF -- they can finally clean up the sloppy stuff ... it could be a special March.

Re: Iup basketball
IUP 74
Clarion 58
Final
Win No. 25 tonight tied the school record for most wins in regular season (1994 and 2010). A win at Cal Saturday would set a new school record.Last edited by IUPbigINDIANS; 02-22-2017, 09:24 PM.

Since crossover games only counted recently, the seven games is definitely a record. It's almost impossible to win by 7 games with the old 14 or 16 conference games.

See 3.1.1. For three-way ties, the tie for the highest seed among the 3 or more teams will be done first, then revert to the start of the tiebreaker.
