  • Was just perusing rosters and schedules for various schools.. noticed Hurst girls OPEN the season AT Notre Dame.

Would we like to take guesses at a score? I'm legit thinking this will be a UCONN WBB vs Quinnipiac (etc) score where if they keep the deficit to within 75 it's a "good game".

ND could easily hit 150 if they wanted lol

Expect Hurst to play several of these games each year. They need to bring in revenue to justify the jump. The losses will pile up.

How much for each of these games? I'm sure the men pay more than the women.

More than enough to cover travel. When Pat Cleary was coaching Edinboro he told me that Miami OH paid them $25k (they beat Miami) and Pitt paid $15k. I'd imagine Notre Dame pays in the $50k ballpark for a D1.

I'd guess that is pretty close. ND is a women's basketball powerhouse so they have to entice the lambs to the slaughter somehow. I'd guess what Pitt pays is the more common range, however.

On a personal level, I do wish Gary well in this transition. He grew on me over time, and I loosely got to know him a bit over the years. He'd often have dinner at the Hilton after games or the night before (Mercyhurst had money and would always come the day before for basketball games). I just think this is going to be a very rough few years for him up until he retires. It's funny ... Gary and Joe hated each other early in their rivalry. It was awkward just to watch them before a game try to chit chat with each other. That relationship slowly changed throughout the course of a decade-long war. They actually became pretty tight friends. I know Gary played a part in Joe signing Luke Triggs this off-season.

I totally understand they're gonna get some coin out of it, but that's the only thing they'll be taking away from it. It's not even a game you can "get a feel" for anything. They won't be in the game after 4 minutes lol

According to Twitter research, it’s about 70-100k for a men’s game. Less info for the women. That’s a ton of freaking money.

It will be a difficult transition for sure. Gary seemed to have elevated his talent on a consistent basis prior to this last season. Earlier in his PSAC tenure, he didn’t have the depth of talent that he did from 2018-23. When he had the roster, they went on quite a five year run.

From afar he seems like a difficult coach to play for, so you wonder if he’ll have to adjust with the losing that is likely coming down the tracks.

                • Tony Bennett (UVA) is retiring immediately.

Sports Illustrated is reporting health is not a factor.

This should be a good story.

I’m seeing a lot of things swirling about him being fed up with the state of college basketball. He’s very tight with Jay Wright who left for essentially the same reason.

But if it really is that and nothing salacious, the timing is certainly weird.

Yes. If that's the case it's pretty F'd up. Quitting 20 days before the first game?

BTW, I know another coach that's close friends with Jay Wright. Just sayin'. This is kind of what I was referring to to on the other side of the board.

Coaches from that generation are fed up.

As long as his leaving isn’t tied to something ugly, it’s quite a legacy he leaves behind. He seems to have massive respect from his peers while most fans hated the style his teams played. And they were the ultimate feast or famine when it came to the tournament. They seemingly either lost in the first round or went deep, mostly the former. Obviously the first #1 to lose to a 16. Then the very next year his boring team goes on probably the most exciting run to a natty we’ve seen in years. For a program that did everything slow and steady, it was quite a rollercoaster.

He’s confirming at his press conference that the state of the sport is why he’s leaving. Apparently leaving this close to the season is something coaches will do to ensure their top assistant gets the job and presumably prevent a mass exodus. I’m no expert on that practice or how effective it is.

I've not seen anything to suggest that, but I totally understand the timing if that's why he did it this way.

With the NCAA's new transfer rules, they open up a 30 day window for players to transfer if their coach leaves. So technically, all of those players have 30 days to enter a transfer portal for only UVA players if they so choose. Because the semester has started and because you are unlikely to find any schools with openings or the ability this close to the season to cook up a fake NIL deal, they'll likely all stay put. If they want to leave, they'll essentially just not play basketball and either redshirt or just not use a year of eligibility and leave after the season.

The alternative is enter and perhaps become a real hot commodity in the arena of 'mid-year transfers'

You lose some time, of course, but you could be very, very valuable. Injuries happen. Teams would love to add an impact player at the mid-year. The wealthy would probably start a bidding war if they need help somewhere.

If this is true, yes, it protects his assistants. I just don't see how this helps his freshmen whom he just sold on playing for him. I know. I know. They pick the school and not the coach (insert LOL here).
