I absolutely hate that conference winners have to play first four. First four is NOT part of the experience. You want the chance to play the best teams in the country.

If I could change it, conference winners/auto bids CANNOT play in the first four and must be assigned a definite seed in the field of 64. The first four shohkd be your bubble teams... to me, ideally, seeds 7-11. Or just have it be all the 9 seeds. Those should be your teams like UNC this year. Decent season, didn't win conference, on bubbles. UCONN could've been another (i personally think they're seeded too high). And so on.

And yes I do have that stubborn mind frame in general.
    - first four is not part of the actual tournament
    - cleveland baseball is forever the Indians
    - gannon plays at the hammer mill center or the Audi
    - mercyhurst is a D2 school lmao

    Last one was for laughs

I would add to your list that the last match of Wrestlemania night one is not a Wrestlemania main event.

The contrary opinion is it gives them a legitimate chance to win a game in the tournament. But I'm with you. I'd prefer that they have the 11 or 12 seeds all play for a shot at playing on Thursday or Friday.
Yeah, I’m guessing if you asked anybody who has lost a first four game if it really felt like they made the tournament they’d say no.

Incidentally, I picked the UNC/SDSU winner to go to the Sweet 16, fully expecting it would be UNC. I wouldn’t be shocked if they went even further. It seems like the most criticized selection almost always goes on some kind of run.

        • Job opening in Morgantown. Darian DeVries has accepted the Indiana job, leaving WVU after just one season.

It sounds like IU is going to pay the buyout of nearly $5m to WVU.

          • Current Utah State HC (and former Fairmont State and Youngstown State HC) Jerrod Calhoun is being mentioned as a candidate at WVU.

McCollum, Crutchfield (or one of his proteges) would be a better choice. They both schooled him even though he had better athletes.

Makes sense. He spent 5 years there, 10 in the state. What he did at Youngstown doesn’t look mind blowing on paper, but that was a basketball wasteland and his last few seasons were the best they’d had in decades.

The flip side is you can win a lot of games at Utah State. In a year or two he could put himself in line for an even bigger job. Or maybe they make a run in this tournament and he becomes a target for bigger jobs right now.

I kind of think WVU is becoming 'stepping stone' level to the next level (to the perceived elite jobs).

There's an online push to bring Huggins back. If he's cleaned up his personal life, ... maybe they'd entertain it.

Never say never. Rich Rod came back.

I’ve always been a fan of Huggins but a 71 year old alcoholic isn’t worth the risk in my opinion. You’re on the brink of disaster literally every day.

WVU is a stepping stone job. So are about 300 other D1 basketball jobs (or more, I don’t know exactly how many D1 programs there are at this point). Like football, it’s all about the B1G and the SEC, along with a small handful of other places (Duke, UNC etc). It’s no different than the situation with players at this point. Bring in the best guy you can with the understanding he won’t be around long. Just hope he maximizes the results in that time. I’d absolutely go after Calhoun, McCollum and any other young star if I was WVU.

It's a crazy industry. You have to strike when the iron is hot. For the vast majority, it doesn't stay hot for too long.

I think Pitt has an interesting situation now with Capel.

The Big 12 really suffered from the SEC defections when you look at it from a basketball perspective.

I don't think Jeff Capel is a very good coach, and I've never been impressed or enamored by him like many. I think he is appealing to players because of his Duke connections; and he seems like a "cool guy" to the players. He is always right in the mix for huge recruits, but those huge targets never pick him once they get down to their Top 3 or Top 5 schools. He has mostly done a decent job recruiting and has brought in some talented players, but there has been zero development with nearly any of those guys.

The problem with his situation at Pitt is that they are unable to move on from him financially. I mean... You CAN move on from him financially, but I'm just not sure that's the best use of your dollars. Even though I'm not a fan of him, his best roster netted two NCAA Tournament wins. That at least means he can do it if he has the team.

The unfortunate game that now exists is that you have to think long and hard about how you want to spend your dollars. WVU football is already finding that out after paying Neal Brown's hefty buyout. They are struggling with recruiting, transfers, etc. The fans wanted Brown gone and used their donated dollars to make that happen. Now they have no money to build a team. So if you are Pitt, if you fire Capel you have to pay him to not coach, pay the next guy to be your coach, and still pay for your roster. Most programs don't have nearly enough money to do all three of those things. Again, not a Capel fan, but I'd rather the money used to pay the buyout be allocated for building a better roster.
