Very nice -- younger brother continuing the tradition. If he's half as good as Jake (and I certainly imagine so), we've got a winner.

In that vein, in this 2015 piece, Jake said that Nick will be "the best" out of all of their athletic family members:

GLVC coaches poll is out: http://www.glvcsports.com/news/2018/...all-title.aspx

          No surprises...1. BU 2. Drury 3. Lewis...

I hate to sound like the disgruntled USI fans, but USI is probably overated at #4.

Dropped by practice yesterday. All the players were present and accounted for. Two, however, were on the sidelines, not practicing, presumably injured: Corbett and Palombizio. They both shot around and we're in exercise garb, but not practice uniforms. I did not see any brace, bandage, limp, or obvious injury on either of them. At least as far as Palombizio is concerned, I'm guessing it wasn't anything real serious. Corbett could have been a continuation of previous problems.
Team was working hard, they were drilling more than scrimmaging, so I did not come away with a complete picture of how good the freshmen are. Tipton actually impressed me the most. Very athletic with a quick release. Penn is very quick, but I don't think I got to see what he's capable of. He did have a bit of a freshman deer in the headlights look. Penny looks so much like Jenkins, I did not think he was there at first. Jenkins was moving and looking good, no reason to think he is not 100%.

Another verbal commitment for the Knights from Ohio from Alec Pfriem (Archbishop Moeller). Verbal Commits listed offers from Air Force and Western Carolina. Prep Hoops article included other DI schools reportedly being interested (Xavier, Davidson, NKU) but I'm not sure of the level of interest.

Good stuff. I know practices are open, but what time are they held? They practiced at 5:30a ("morning madness") and 2p on Monday, but that was during fall break.

Thanks for the scoop. Very nice -- high-level skills and academics. Sounds like Pfriem could "fry 'em" as a shooting guard.

I am expecting a relatively close game on Sunday versus UofL. Not sure if either team will be starting their "real" starters, but the rotation will tell us who expects to be getting the minutes in the regular season. Big issue for Bellarmine is whether two of their big guys, Corbett and Palombizio will be playing.

Scouting UofL: They have a very good team, much better than would have been expected 8 months ago. As always with elite D1 teams, they have a huge advantage in length and strength. Their big guys, however, are not going to be the focuse of their offense. Look for swing players V.J. King (6'5") and Jordan Nwora (6'7") to be taking a lot of shots for them. They are both NBA level talents. Cunningham (6'2"), a graduate transfer from Samford, is a solid point guard for them although not a matchup problem for BU. Malik Williams (6'11" 250lbs) is huge and BU cannot match up with him physically. He is not, however, a great offensive talent. Keeping him off the boards will be difficult. I suspect that the Knights will do a pretty good job on the defensive end and hold them under 50% shooting.

The real difference with elite D1 teams is the quality of defense they play. They presure the passing lanes as well as contest shots. I don't believe that BU has ever shot 50% in one of these D1 exhibitions. Adam Eberhard has a tendency to throw the ball away when confronted with superior length (something that just does not happen in many D2 games). Their ability to crowd the passing lanes will be a big challenge to Parker Chitty. Nwora for UofL is considered a weak link on defense, so BU's offense may be able to create some good scoring chances for our wing shooters. Not sure if the Cardinals will full court press. If they do, I expect it to cause a lot of difficulty for the Knights. If they press, it will provide good experience for Bellarmine but turnovers will be high. Bellarmine will at least match UofL in shooting percentage, but turnovers and offensive rebounds are likely to give the Cards a significant advantage. If BU keeps it within 10, that will be a great showing.

BTW: Scotty is 1-1 against Chris Mack.

More people at the reception last night than were at games 15 years ago. Times have changed.
I think not only our men are ready for a big year but also our women.

Now if they had free chick-fil-a, Imperazelli's Pizza and open bar fifteen years ago I'm sure they would have filled up the place regardless of how good the team was! Of course the reception was limited to season tix holders and I think nearly everyone of them showed up. And you gots to have some Chitty! He was pumped up even for a weird exhibition. Told Moves that if BU wins the tip against UofL Chitty should shoot the over the back mid court shot right away. Might be the most open he will be in that game!

I'll leave it to the others to post ad nauseum about the game today, but will continue to say that, one of these years, Bellarmine is actually going to knock off U of L on the hardwood; while the uninitiated will be shocked, we in the know will say that we saw it coming for years.

Regarding season tickets, along the lines of the apathy the USI guys complain about, BU sells a lot, but they could do more. I know a few people who, in the off-season, contacted the BU athletics office about getting season tix and never heard anything. Scotty is the best marketer you could ask for, but it seems to me that those on the administrative side just kind of cruise along as in the past. So I worry about when Coach D hangs it up, and not for on-the-court reasons. If Doug Davenport is the "coach in waiting," he's an awesome guy, and I think would be a solid coach, but I don't think he'd "move the marketing needle" like his father (and, frankly, I don't know who would).

Respectable, but not great. Some silly turnovers and bad shots really hurt. Ben Weyer played great. Adam Eberhard played well but made too many mistakes. Jenkins and Corbett did a bunch of great things but missed some shots they need to make. The less said about Alex the better. Frankly the level of defense played by Bellarmine will smother the rest of their schedule.

Defense and rebounding were great. The offensive effort was lacking but that is probably more do to the talent of the Uof L team which has been defensively-minded for years under Pitino and probably will continue that way under Mack. There were several missed chippies and unforced turnovers though. Can't have that, especially the throw away at the top of the circle for an easy layup kind.
