  • Division II College Football Imperialism Map

Any of you who frequent /r/CFB are no doubt familiar with College Football Imperialism. At the start of the season, each county in the United States is assigned to the football team closest to it. As the season progresses, whenever a team loses, all the land that team holds is transferred to the team who beat them.

In this Division II edition, each of the 167 teams starts with at least one county. The starting empires range from Livingstone's single county to Simon Fraser's entirety of Alaska plus five counties in Washington. By the end of the season, ownership will be in fewer hands; the champion is guaranteed to have a significant portion, but it's entirely possible for land to end up with non-playoff teams. I am electing to limit this to D2 teams, so if someone loses to a non-D2 team, they retain their land.

The starting map can be seen here: https://i.imgur.com/rPRY7AJ.jpg. (It's too large to display on here.) This map does not reflect any of the games that have been played so far. I hope to update this weekly as the season progresses.

EDIT: At OBULurker's suggestion, I will link each new map on this post.

I feel Delta State should own more counties than Mississippi College, I might just be bias though :). In all seriousness, this is really cool, should be fun to follow throughout the season.

I always love these! Glad someone has taken it up! Thank you for the content. It really puts into perspective just how empty the West is for D2 football.

Hmm, I wonder how this plays out? So if a team beats a team that lost the previous week, the winning team won't pick up any counties since they went to another team? I've not seen this before so it'll be a bit interesting. So the counties that Ashland owned went to Indy. So now, no GLIAC team can pick those "Ashland" counties up since they went to Indy? True, whatever counties Ashland picks up with future wins become available. Hmmm. It's a fun exercise though.

Yes exactly. These always confuse people right away but you've got a good grasp of it already. You can beat a team and gain no land if the team you beat had just lost.
with the D2 format there will be a lot of land the eventual national champion won't own, I imagine the NSIC will have land that doesn't make it to playoffs with not everyone playing each other

            This is great.

One thing to note is that MSU Billings does not have football.

That's Black Hills State in yellow, not MSU Billings

Is Hawaii really closer to Western Oregon than Azusa Pacific?

Yes, when you account for the earth's curvature.

As a lover of anything geographic, statistics, and stuff like that, I this is absolutely awesome. I'll be checking in every week.

A lot of times times especially with big schools the fans don't understand these and assume it's a map of fandom, when infact it has nothing to do with fandom but the geographic closeness of a location. It's always fun to see the map become less and less crowded

For a minute I thought you left off West Florida but because they're in the pan handle I see they grab the bottom of Alabama. Good job,I'll be tuning in.

                            My mistake!

They both have the same mascot and I couldn't see the detail.

But if Ashland goes and beats a team that owns land again, then Ashland will take over that land. They face Walsh next, but Walsh's land is going to go to Duquesne (I'm guessing) and never get taken because Duquesne doesn't face any more D-II teams.
