The precedent was set in 1942. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1942_Rose_Bowl

Another great example, though I don't really think nor care too much about the Leyland Stanford Junior University (yes, that's the school's official name) nor the University of California (comma) Berkeley.

        Calford. Or Stanley.

If I'm the MAC, I'd be pretty ticked off right now as a gaggle of idiots in DeKalb, Ill. have pretty much undermined what's left of college sports sanity (though, to be fair, adding Massachusetts-Amherst kinda nullifies any gripes the MAC might have over NIU's ridiculous stunt).
As an alum of San Jose State (a MW member) I don't think it's a smart move either and I'd rather not have NIU in the MW. I was hoping they'd keep it an actual Mountain West conference and not spread halfway across the country, but they think they've tapped into the Chicago market. DeKalb is 65 miles away from Chicago, so it's technically in the market. But I doubt many people in Chicagoland follow NIU when they have Northwestern and the Big Ten. I've heard (can't say it's a fact) that UC Davis is supposed to move up their football program to FBS after they do some upgrades. I think they will so they can be a full member of the MW.

Of the two I like Stanley better.

The Horizon and OVC make geographic sense but those are both small-timey leagues even compared to the MAC. I can’t see them getting invited to the American and C-USA, while comparable to the MAC, is broadly a southern conference anymore so I don’t know if that’s a realistic option either.
Matt Brown of the Extra Points blog has reported that the Horizon, Summit, and OVC have all expressed interest in having NIU join. I believe the expectation is that they'll join the Horizon though. Much better travel for them there (for their Olympic sports), even better than what they have now in the MAC I believe

              • According to Sports-Reference NIU football previously spent three seasons in the Big West so I guess there’s some precedent for this.

                  • UC Davis will be moving up to FBS eventually so the MW will have 10 football teams. And I have a feeling they might add another in the future as well.

                      • Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts is relocating next to their mothership campus in New York. Bard College is NCAA DIII - Liberty League, and their sister campus does actually have varsity sports, though I believe the Llamas only compete against other local colleges and it seems to just be informal scheduling vs. being in an actual conference.

BCSR is an "early college" which allows high school students to enroll directly after 10th grade and most get the AA - which is how they were able to put together a fairly impressive list of alumni since 1964, including the Coen Brothers.

Remains to be seen if the Llamas will continue play after 2024, but even if they do - their name won't have the connection to the college that it used too.

Is this the place that Al Pacino threatened to take a flamethrower to in Scent of a Woman? No, wait, that was Baird.

I was thinking the same thing! We could still take it to Bard too! Probably wouldn't be missed! But they do have almost 1,000 signature to save it. That will certainly not have an impact.

                            • Nothing official, but Chicago State is looking at adding football for 2026. Seems like a long shot, but good luck.

Longshot would be putting it mildly... That athletic program has been struggling for what seems like an eternity, yet they're still insisting on staying D1 instead of dropping to D2. Make it make sense for me...
