Last question: Obviously when it comes to NIL, I'm sure Penn State to opening the checkbook pretty wide.

    1) How does major D1 wrestling NIL compare to, say, major D1 men's basketball
    2) Are the PSAC D1 programs involved in NIL, and, if so, what kind of scratch are we talking?

    • To me, it's always interesting in wrestling how there almost always are a couple of kids each year at the high school level who clearly differentiate themselves from the rest. I got up to the state meet a few years when I was covering high school sports. I remember a kid from our local HS who had over 100 career wins going up to states, winning his first match, and then get handled like a toy iin the next match. I think he ran into Kevin Darkus, a kid from Erie who was being recruited by Iowa. Another I remember was Jack Cuvo from Easton, who'd win matches simply by taking a kid down, letting him up, and then taking him down again. He'd do that time after time. I think he won one of the matches I saw by something like 18-9.

The regular season in PA high school wrestling seems to have more blowouts than even football does, but when two good teams finally go head-to-head, it's quite the atmosphere.

For whatever the reason, high school wrestling crowds are very different than high school basketball crowds.

Maybe not quite as much but portal transfers are really common. Interestingly, 2 out of the 3 top Bloomsburg wrestlers this year transferred from the Haven, where they would not have started. Also, Lock Haven's heavyweight is a transfer from Edinboro.

Over the weekend, AJ Ferrari (the most hated college wrestler) lost in the heavyweight finals at the Big 10 championships sending the crowd into a frenzy. He is at Nebraska now which is his 3rd school after starting at Oklahoma State, transferring to Cal-Bakersfield and ending up at Nebraska. The college wrestling portal is very active.

In general, wrestling doesn't have the media attention like basketball, but there is NIL money at certain wrestling schools. During recruiting for Bo Bassett of Bishop McCort, who is the #1 recruit in the country, it was thought that Iowa outbid Penn State. $5 million was a number thrown around on the internet but nobody really knows how much it was. Cael Sanderson adamantly said he wasn't going to get into a bidding war about it. Bassett eventually decommitted from Iowa and is signed with Virginia Tech.

              • Also to give an idea of the college wrestling landscape, Penn State won 7 of 10 weight classes in the Big 10 championships over the weekend. That essentially means PSU is considerably better than all the other Big 10 teams combined, and the Big 10 is the dominant conference in NCAA wrestling. No school has ever been so dominant.

There are a lot more forfeits at the high school level now than when I used to cover wrestling. Some of the schools don't seem to get as many kids out, and kids these days are more liable to quit if they're not starting, which leaves a lot of teams without much depth. They actually had it up to 14 weight classes a few years back and reduced back to 13 as they were getting at least one forfeit in a great majority of the matches. Even with 13, few schools are going to have quality at every weight. Wrestling and BB crowds are very different. There are fewer wrestling fans at most places, but they tend to be a very passionate and dedicated lot.

Sanderson is where Gable was at Iowa years ago. The top dudes want to wrestle for him.

LCCC (Lehigh Carbon Community College) has had all of its physical campuses closed for over a week due to a mysterious “IT disruption.” School officials did finally manage to re-open the Schnecksville campuse, but the rest of their locations are still closed, and a lot of classes are still in either online or hybrid settings. The duration and the fact that they voluntarily took their network offline has me wondering if they were the victim of a cyberattack/ransomware, and what kind of plans our schools have in place for a similar event.

Community colleges got hit hard by ransomware this week. They also got the CC in Beaver County.

I hadn’t heard about that one.

I know the government is going after drug runners and illegal aliens but I think cybercriminals are pretty evil. We should maybe have an even bigger emphasis on tracking down the culprits and stopping that sort of thing. It seems absurd.

In the fall, Russian troll farms were emailing bomb threats to universities. I've read online that they believe these latest cyberattacks are coming from Iran.

We do spend money on finding cybercriminals, but the unfortunate reality is a good amount of them originate overseas, especially in South Asia. Not all of those governments are cooperative when it comes to finding or extraditing them.
