Who knows. They've played a couple of these over the years that never appeared on the official schedule. Perhaps there is a difference between a scrimmage and an exhibition in the world of schedule publishers. I just hope they are flying. IUP to Coral Gables in a freaking bus would be torture.

I do think Mercyhurst could challenge IUP this year- last few years we've won the league running away. I also think UPJ could finish higher but losing Mulbah is a big loss.

In related news, Pitt is playing two exhibition games vs the PSAC West... Edinboro and Clarion.

I pretty much agree with your West predictions. I'd probably make a few flips.

UPJ and Cal are probably interchangeable.

Fred Mulbah leaving UPJ was devastating for them. He was such a dynamic point guard and was so athletic/versatile that he opened up the floor for everybody else. They did sign a (rare for them) transfer PG as a quick fix but those are awfully big shoes to fill.

Cal has to replace two stars (Alston and Pegram) and a top role-player (Boswell). They do have Jermaine Hall Jr. coming back. He missed last year due to injury. He's started a lot of games for the Vulcans and is a force under the basket. His return will offset Alston's loss some. I know Pegram drove some of the Cal fans nuts at times but he was a really strong player.

Cal and UPJ will both be tough teams this year but I don't see either being as good as last year.

In the next tier, I'd probably flip SRU and Gannon. The Rock took some heavy losses but Ian Grady (and, KR before him) always seem to have a knack for finding their next imports off the scrap heap. SRU was a really dangerous team last year toward the end. Gannon just seems off under Jefferson. I don't see the 'team' play ... it's more individual. They've had talent under his watch but have underachieved. One of their stars last year, while getting blown out at the KCAC, turned to the crowd after hitting a trey (while down 30) and yelled "I get mine" ... says it all. They had a big loss to the Portal, but do have some nice players back.

Clarion has Gerald Jarmon back. He's a very talented guard and can score in bunches. But, his low-post running mate, Lawrence Lemon, is gone. Jarmon would probably be the first pick in PSAC West Fantasy Basketball this year as he's going to put up crazy numbers. But, his supporting cast is limited.

Edinboro was set to have a very formidable post duo in Dom Keyes and Terrance Moore. Moore, however, is no longer in the program as of this summer. Their two best guards from last year are also gone. Cleary often finds a way to get them somewhat competitive but he has a challenge in front of him this year.

Seton Hill enters a total rebuild (of a total rebuild) under its new coach. Arguably his best returning player transferred to IUP this off-season.

As for the top, IUP and Mercyhurst should be on a collision course. When the Lakers' two star guards pulled out of the Portal and returned to Erie, it pretty much set the West race in motion.

1. First and foremost: Shawndale Jones' recovery. I've heard he's doing very well. When camp starts he'll be at about 10 months out from the injury.

2. Who is the starting PG? Lot of candidates. I'm assuming it's Dillard. Morris is capable but much more productive at the 2 or 3. Replacing Armoni Foster in this position is a major task.

3. Polce likely becomes the 6th man -- a role he can thrive in. Seton Hill import Jaylen Stewart also gives them great depth at the position.

4. Porterfield and Sulaiman give Joe an incredible combo underneath. Brooks and Diop likely their backups. Brooks is a monster. He's going to be hard to keep on the bench but will give them a huge punch when he plays. There's certainly a role for Diop. He can do a lot of 'garbage man' things and is better on offense than most realize. He can also run a faster 40 at 6'10" than many guards.

5. Bethea and Waldo. History says Joe will redshirt both but the word on the street is both are ready to play. I'm personally leaning toward the redshirt for both as minutes will be thin. They are listing Waldo as a 6'7" Forward but don't be surprise if he becomes as much as a guard as a forward as time goes on.

6. Will we see the run-n-gun from early last season (pre-Shawndale injury) or the more slow-down approach we saw (post-Shawndale injury)?

7. Joe scheduled pretty tough for this team. That's backfired more than once in the past decade. Add to it he's getting some East big boys in crossover.

8. Winning a 4th straight PSAC title is within reach for this team but it won't be easy.

"East big boys?" Hard to see anyone in our division seriously challenging IUP this year barring significant IUP injuries. Upsets are always possible, but really IUP has lost little outside of Foster, and Jones's return certainly should cover that. Most of the eastern teams have lost significant players. ESU looks as if they could be pretty good. Ship will need some young guys in the backcourt to step up big-time.
