  • Re: PSAC WEST

I had wanted to make the trip to Cal on Saturday but it was my oldest's birthday.

I'm very thankful for the new PSAC streaming app. I've been able to watch several games this year from the comfort of my couch with a good beer an arms length away.

Thinking of making a trip to Edinboro this coming weekend just to catch a game.

      Men's PSAC West Standings

      (PSAC, Overall, Streak)

      Edinboro (5-1, 8-2) W4

      IUP (4-1, 8-4) W3

      Slippery Rock (4-2, 10-2) W8

      UPJ (4-2, 6-4) W3

      Mercyhurst (2-3, 5-4) W1

      Gannon (2-3, 6-5) W2

      California (2-4, 6-6) L1

      Seton Hill (1-5, 4-7) L1

      Clarion (0-6, 3-9) L1

      Tonight's Games:

IUP at UPJ -- Despite being on the road, it's likely IUP has the bigger crowd. IUP will have a massive size advantage in this game but must play clean. IUP -7

Seton Hill at Edinboro -- Which Seton Hill shows up? One version almost beat West Chester on the road. The other just got smacked at home by Slippery Rock. Edinboro -15

Cheyney at Clarion -- Somebody has to win. Clarion -4.5

Mercyhurst at Slippery Rock -- As close to a heavyweight boxing match as you can get in college basketball. Over/under on technical fouls: 3.5 Slippery Rock -3

Gannon at California -- The visitor thrives on defense. The host plays none and gives up the most points per game in the entire PSAC (89.8). Cal can score, though (86.2 ppg). Cal lets teams launch at will but Gannon doesn't shoot the three much (just 39 made through 11 games on 132 attempts). Polar opposite teams and styles ... tough one to call. Gannon -3

            Men's Standings / 1-5-2017

            Edinboro (6-1, 9-2, W5)

            IUP (5-1, 9-4, W4)

            Slippery Rock (5-2, 11-2, W9)

            UPJ (4-3, 6-5, L1)

            Gannon (3-3, 7-5, W3)

            Mercyhurst (2-4, 5-5, L1)

            California (2-5, 6-7, L2)

            Seton Hill (1-6, 4-8, L2)

            Clarion (0-7, 3-10, L2)

            Saturday's games:

Clarion at Seton Hill -- Neither team is going to win many games in the West. This is a big chance for both. The Griffins pull out a close one in front of 35 people in Greensburg. Seton Hill -5

California at Slippery Rock -- The Rock is the surprise team thus far. The question still looms how good they actually are ... Bloomsburg (6-5) is still the best win out of 11 victories so far. One thing is clear: SRU is crushing people inside and playing nasty defense. Cal will give them a better test. Will Kevin Reynolds already be looking to Monday nights trip to Indiana? SRU is tough at home and the Vulcans inside game will be little match. Rock -9

Kutztown at Edinboro -- This is a big one. Kutztown got down huge against West Chester two days ago (23 points) but came all the way back in the final moments before losing in the end. Kutztown got zero points in its last two possessions to either tie or take the lead. It's a long haul up to Edinboro -- and Edinboro can play. But, Edinboro hasn't really been tested since mid-November. Kutztown can punch back and is more battle-tested. Fighting Scots -1

Mercyhurst at IUP -- It took the Hawks a half to recover from their XMAS hangover. Then they went nuts. IUP's record in home Saturday night games the past 20 years is off the charts. Due to the rivalry factor, the Lakers hang around for a bit but IUP has too many weapons. Mercyhurst coach Gary Manchel is Villian No. 2 inside the KCAC. A monster week looms for IUP but the Hawks get this one done. IUP -8

Gannon at UPJ -- Another great game. UPJ can play. The Mountain Cats have taken regional powers Virginia State and IUP in to the final minute. Of the last four meetings in this series, two have gone to OT (GU won both) and the other two have been split nail-biters. UPJ is good enough to stay in big games. The part they don't have yet is the ability to finish close games. Gannon -1

Kutztown gets by Edinboro in the final seconds with some help from the officials.

Three times in that game players collided while going for a loose ball. Two of those times Edinboro was called for a foul. I don't get it.

It's all the crew. IUP and Mercy had the 'TV Crew' today. I call these three clowns that because I think they like taking over the game. They are horrible ... call everything.

That Boro loss hurt me today in the pick 'em. Kutztown is a solid team.

Kind of like football, the PSAC only gets so many to the dance. It's going to be interesting.

Crazy stat line in Gannon / SHU women's game.

At the third quarter media timeout (4:37 remaining).
Gannon shooting 74% from field (including a stretch of 14 consecutive makes including all 9 in the second quarter). SHU shooting 45%
Gannon 17/19 from line, SH 5/6
                    Gannon outrebounding SHU 23-9

How much is Gannon ahead by? Would you have guessed only eight?? SHU had made 7 threes to Gannon's 1. Gannon also had 13 turnovers to SH's 5.

Gannon wound up surrendering the 58-50 lead and wound up losing 79-78 on a SH rebound basket with 4 seconds left.

Jair Green had a strong game for Gannon -- 21 points on 7/12 shooting, including 4/6 from behind the arc. But what had the fans talking was a windmill dunk over a hapless Seton Hill defender ... regulars said the best dunk since the Darrelle Blanton days! An entertaining 75-60 win. Boro should be interesting on Wednesday.

Cal came back from 23 down in second half to beat Lock Haven last night.

Lock Haven star Amir Hinton went for 47 points in the loss.

                            January 10

Seton Hill at Mercyhurst - The Lakers took out the frustrations on a struggling Clarion team last outing. Seton Hill is too sporadic to deal with the Mercyhurst defense. Lake Show -5

Pitt-Johnstown at California - UPJ has dropped three straight but could have won all three. Cal has also played tough in recent losses. Tough call here. UPJ -3

Slippery Rock at Clarion - The Golden Eagles are a mess. Two of its perceived top recruits are no longer playing. The Rock will overwhelm tonight. Rock -17

East Stroudsburg at IUP - ESU may be the deepest team in the PSAC. The 40-minute press is going to be a major challenge for IUP and its short bench. ESU is big, fast and can shoot. IUP is all of those, too. Joe has won the last two meetings and is tough at home. IUP has a proven track record of slowing games down against such opponents. That's a must tonight. IUP -1

Edinboro at Gannon - Big game at the Hammermill. Lot of emotions in this rivalry. The Knights are playing well and are tough in the 'Mill. Edinboro is coming off the heart-breaker to Kutztown. Who controls the pace? The defensive guru John Reilly will frustrate the guard trio. Fighting Scots -4 in a thriller. Huge game for both in the West standings.

What players are no longer playing? Are they still on the roster, or are they out with injury/discipline issues?

Chris Pipkin has only played in 6 games. Ahmad Wimbush played in just 4 games.

Pipkin last played Dec. 18 against PSU-Dubois. Wimbush hasn't played since Nov. 28.

I have no idea why ... but both were thought to be heavy contributors for them entering the season. They are still listed on the roster. Both played very little minutes in the early games in which they did appear.
