  • I was listening to college sports radio today and there was discussion on this topic. Sacramento is only using the MAC as a stepping stone for something better, as no other conference wanted them right now. The MAC of course was looking to replace Northern Illinois and their TV contract is coming up. They are desperate to stay relevant.

They also were mocking the Sacramento president noting "he has never met a microphone he didn't like".

        • Unless you’re retired or live close by, weeknight games are a non-starter for most fans. Tailgating is minimal and so is attendance. Only the diehards show up. Of course being a winning program helps. Division 2 Grand Valley State, located in the heart of MAC country, draws significantly more fans than most MAC schools averaging nearly 12,000 per home contest in a stadium that is said to seat 10,500 or so. Certainly being relevant in the division you play in helps and the MAC is not relevant at the FBS level. They are FCS at best and some should drop to Division 2.

          • Of course Grand Valley is a bigger school than Western, Central, or Eastern Michigan too, but I get your point. I agree they should be FCS, but that would put their ESPN contract in jeopardy along with the payoffs they get from Power 4 schools to keep their athletic programs afloat.

But he accomplished exactly what he set out to do.

This will be the Mountain East's third attempt with an Ohio school as the other two that were in the MEC are now defunct. They will probably have better luck with this one as it is a public school.

Shawnee State is only one of two state schools in Ohio that are D2 (the other being Central State). While Michigan and PA have a number of state schools at the D2 level, most of Ohio's D2 schools are private.

For football Shawnee State is planning to play their games at the former home of the Detroit Lions. As weird as that sounds, it is true. Spartan-Municipal Stadium - Original Home of the NFL Spartans (Detroit Lions) | Scioto Historical

                • The MAAC intends to rebrand to avoid confusion with the MAC. As long as they don't change the name of the conference to C.H.E.E.S.E.

                  • Should just change the name to Another Loser D1 Conference.

                    • My guess is after a disastrous attempt at rebranding, the MAAC will go back to its roots. Call it the Return Of The MAAC. I'm sure Mark Morrison would be available for an endorsement deal.

                      • Evidently the decision to change was announced in October, but the school is still using Pioneers until the end of the school year to avoid confusion. Lewis & Clark is changing to the River Otters.

I've noticed that a number of places have changed away from Pioneers. I'm surprised that Denver hasn't yet.

                        • Ridiculous. Just continuing to show the stupidity of todays' youth. They equate pioneers with bad and evil, but if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have the country we do today. People risked everything to start a new life out west. A number of them sacrificed their lives. Needless to say there would be no Lewis and Clark College if it wasn't for the pioneers.

Such is the world we live in today.

It's all about how they treated the people who were already there first. Just trying to find a different place to make a better life is part of the human spirit, that alone makes no person bad and evil.

Agreed - the youth are pretty stupid. I want to know who in their right mind decided that the University of North Dakota needed to change the name of their mascot. It always bothered me that they carelessly wiped away a state symbol and piece of North Dakota heritage. It was a perfectly inoffensive nickname that was faithful to their geography. Alas, someone complained and the North Dakota Flickertails are but a distant memory.

Damn kids of the 1920s, changing all the college mascot names. First it's the Flickertails, then someday it'll be the New College of Florida Null Sets. *sigh* There's just no end to the craziness.

(I'm joking - on a serious note, I don't really care what Lewis and Clark calls themselves. Not exactly a school on my radar, or most other people's)

Daemen and D'Youville will join the PSAC as affiliate members for tennis in 26-27-- Daemen for men's and women's, D'Youville for women's.

Their primary conference, the ECC, was sitting at 4 and 5 members for men's and women's tennis, respectively, so with this it seems likely that they'll drop the sport. No word on where the remaining three members (UDC, Queens, St. Thomas Aquinas) will put their programs going forward.
