For decades they could just sit back and get monster-sized freshmen classes year after year. Obviously, that's not the case today.

From the surface, it sure seems IUP failed to adapt to the times. They got lazy in recruitment. They have tons of majors nobody wants anymore.

Not sure how any President survives losing 5,000 students during his (relatively) short tenure. That's a mind-boggling number. Many factors, sure, ... but, end of the day, he's 5k less than when he started. Any bean counter can tell you that's a whole lot of coin.

IUP's reputation in Western PA is also at perhaps an all-time low right now. Are people (parents) questioning if it's safe here? Yes. Slippery Rock has become more modern. It also isn't on the news for violent crimes every 12-14 days.
What do you mean? Max Redfield was very happy with the Mandarin Chinese offering. LOL.

I would like to know exactly which 43 university programs are getting the hatchet.

That's it right there. And it's not specific to IUP.

Pitt and Penn State outlet stores as well as privates can get within $5k of our costs. Pricing should use the Aldi philosophy, so low that it's hard to rationalize other options if cost is a factor.

Our admissions offices are also not designed to recruit students or reward our best recruiters. The offices for a long time were application processors. Students applied and the cost difference did the job. Now that our cost savings is much less, we have to do a better job convincing applicants and families to choose our schools. The lack of recruiting accepted applicants to choose our schools makes them seem indifferent. Having union admissions counselors doesn't help either. The contract creates inefficiency (no culture of doing what it takes to do a good job) and disincentivizes performance (raises are automatic instead of performance based).

IUP and others grew into their university status by adding humanities programs. Students who consider PASSHE no longer choose these majors. They want a degree with a clear path to a specific job, rather than wanting to study a subject then find a job related to that field. Also, after decades of crap job prospects, kids don't want to study education anymore. That was a big foundation for everyone even after we generalized. I believe education programs is just 8% of enrollment system-wide.

IUP cuts low enrollment programs that make sense and far less than the number pushed by the union. The uproar causes more damage than if the administration had unilaterally decided on their own.

Faculty usually moan that the university never taps their expertise. But in moments like this, they never propose alternatives. It's always "you can't cut faculty" or "you can't cut those programs". All finances are public record. There's nothing stopping them from proposing alternative plans. Yet they never do.
That pretty much sums it up. For instance the strike 5 years back that kept the cost of adjuncts high relative to the rest of academia certainly had an impact. But they have a point that certain parts of the university have suffered from poor management. The non-academic services, for instance, admissions and financial aid can have a pretty significant impact on student retention. There's no reason that Slippery Rock should be doing fine while IUP is retrenching, other than poor management at IUP.

It's a form of protest, apparently, to show what an Arts-less campus would look like.

Probably the only way I can see the PSAC/Atlantic having a hoops season is to do the bubble thing. Pick several places that are accommodating enough to hold a number of teams and seal them off for a long weekend or so and each team plays a game every day for three or four days. Lots of testing and nobody gets into said bubble with a positive test.

The entire bench area (players, trainers, coaches, etc.) has to get tested 3 times per week. That cost ranges from $33 per to $44 per (from what I've been told).

For purposes of simple math, say 13 players, 3 coaches, 1 trainer ... so, 17 tests at $40 per ... $680 per round of testing times 3 times a week ... $2,040/week. Obviously, that tab is going to get expensive real fast.

The PSAC, from my understanding, needs at least 6 schools to play basketball in order to qualify for the NCAA postseason.

So, which 6 could probably swing this (and, want to do it)? Just a guess but I'd say IUP, Gannon and Mercyhurst for sure. I could see UPJ and Seton Hill electing to play. Possibly California or Slippery Rock. I don't have a good feel on the finances of the East schools.

I'm holding out hope there could be 'some' level of PSAC basketball. We already know West Chester is out. Several programs right off the top aren't coming up with the funds ... Clarion, Mansfield, etc. The decision will need made fairly soon.

    Breaking story from WCCS:

Indiana Borough Police announced today that a third suspect has been apprehended in the fatal shooting on October 17th in Indiana Borough.

Police say that 20-year old Isaiah Moore of Philadelphia was apprehended by state police in Philadelphia and was transferred back to Indiana on Sunday. He was arraigned yesterday on charges of criminal homicide, robbery to inflict serious bodily injury, conspiracy to both of those crimes, and misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking. He is being held in Indiana County Jail without bail and will have a preliminary hearing on November 2nd at 10:00 AM in front of District Judge Christopher Welch.

Moore was one of four suspects in the shooting of Jaedyn Wright on October 17th in a parking lot at the Carriage House apartments on Oakland Avenue. Police believe that Moore, along with 17-year-old Isabella Edmonds of Indiana, 21-year-old Delmar Chatman of Johnstown and 18-year-old Terrion Gates, also of Johnstown, conspired to acquire a quantity of marijuana from Wright with the encounter leading to the shooting. The four fled on foot after the shooting.

Chatman and Edmonds are already in custody and both face charges of criminal homicide and robbery-inflicting serious injury. Edmonds also faces two other conspiracy charges, while Chatman also faces a charge of theft by unlawful taking. Gates remains at large.
