BLOOMSBURG — If the Bloomsburg University football team is looking for a slogan to use during summer workout the line that is fitting would be “Workin’ here boss” from the film “Cool Hand Luke.”

It appears the Huskies have been doing plenty of work based on their showing Saturday on Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium in their annual Maroon-Gold spring game. Coach Frank Sheptock had the offense run 52 scripted plays that concentrated on game situations rather than actual game, and both the offense and defense had their moments.

Starting at its 1-yard line on the first of nine series, the offense moved the ball out of the shadow of its end zone, gaining field position to the 30.

Most of the offensive series started between the 30s, and all but one produced first downs. Scoring, however, was at a premium, with the only points coming on field goals of 25 and 29 yards by backup kicker KJ Riley — the starting quarterback — and a 6-yard run by Riley Parker in a goal-to-goal series.

“No. 1, I am very pleased with our rhythm on offense,” Sheptock said. “We were able to establish the line of scrimmage offensively, and the defense showed mobility.

“What we were able to do was look at the big picture, and we’re going to have more speed this year. We think we can take another step forward.”

After being picked to finish eighth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East last year, the Huskies exceeded expectations with a 6-5 record and a third-place finish. This season, they look to build on that success with five of their 11 games at home.

Bloomsburg opens the season on road Thursday, Sept. 4, against Fairmont State. This is the second time in three years the Huskies will play the school from Fairmont, West Virginia.

Bloomsburg remains on the road in Week 2 when it travels to Greensburg to play Seton Hill in a PSAC East/West crossover game Saturday, Sept. 13. Then the Huskies play their home opener Saturday, Sept. 20, against Edinboro and during halftime all student-athletes, coaches, and teams who earned honors during the 2024-25 winter and spring seasons will be recognized.

Riley believes the winning record last year will have a carryover effect going into this season. He said a strong bond has been built during off-season workouts and spring practice.

“We’re continuing to develop offensively and come together,” Riley said. “I see the same thing happening with the defense, which has a good mix.

“It’s important that we continue to build on what we did last year. I see us coming together as a team.”

Bloomsburg will be tested early with three of its first four games on the road, including its PSAC East opener Saturday, Sept. 27, against Shippensburg. When the Huskies return home Saturday, Oct. 4, to take on Lock Haven the game will serve as both the Husky Legacy Club Game and the annual Think Pink game.

At the event the Huskies will honor the championship teams from 1985 (40th anniversary), 1995 (30th), 2000 (25th), 2005 (20th), and 2010 (15th). Additional details about the alumni celebration will be announced in the coming weeks.

After a trip to East Stroudsburg Saturday, Oct. 11, the Huskies will celebrate Homecoming/Parents and Supporters Weekend Friday-Sunday, Oct. 17-19. They play Shepherd Saturday, Oct. 18.

Concluding the weekend Sunday, Oct. 19, is the 43rd annual Bloomsburg Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon. More information, including registration details, will be available in mid-May.

After road games against Millersville Saturday, Oct. 25, and West Chester Saturday, Nov. 1, the Huskies close the season with two home games. They play Kutztown Saturday, Nov. 8, and Slippery Rock Saturday, Nov. 15, in what is potentially the PSAC Championship Game.

Final opponents for the championship will depend on the top seeds from the PSAC East and West divisions. The final is also Senior Day and Military Appreciation game.
It’s hard to draw many useful conclusions from a spring game. Unless they hit the spring transfer portal hard BU is going to be much younger & less experienced along both lines which is frequently a recipe for rough times in CFB. I noticed while looking over the spring roster that most of the RBs from last year were back except for Zach Zerbe, who had one start and appeared in three other games last year. I’m not sure if he transferred away or was simply out due to medical or personal reasons. I’m also not sure if who carries the rock is going to matter with a lot of newer faces on the OL.

Looks good on film and paper. Bloom lost good one in R-Fr Connor Leary who hit the transfer portal in February, and R-Jr. Carabello-Snowell. Next year will be good QB competition for the starting job.

Pretty impressive. Looks like he didn't have the greatest protection on some of those plays.

            • Hello all. New to the board here. My Son is part of the 25 recruiting class at Bloom. Looking forward to a great year! I’m pretty excited about his class. I believe they got a lot of good football players and I think they’re building something here.

Welcome to the board and to the Husky pack. This is usually a slower time for posting as there aren’t any games; the only things that tend to get people talking this time of year are conference realignment and the transfer portal. People will come around more once we hit fall and rosters are posted for them to discuss surprise additions/subtractions and the schedules are finalized so that they can look ahead and start to suss out what teams look like contenders for the divisions, the conference, and even the Super Region. If you have questions about things like BU history, the PSAC and its history, or D2 football as a whole that weren’t well-covered by the coaching staff this is as good a place as any to ask.

                  • Thank you! I’m familiar with the PSAC, etc. I think it’s a great conference for football. Very competitive with some great athletes. I went to a couple gameday visits at PSAC programs last fall with my Son and watched several games of others and came away impressed with the overall level of play and competitiveness in both the East and the West. I also went to a couple Bloom home games and watched the rest since I had a feeling that’s where he was going to end up. The Bloom coaching staff really made an impression on my Son and myself too. Coach Sheptock is exactly the type of HC he was looking for and I think the future is bright there. I’m familiar with several of the players from the last two classes in particular and I believe they have a chance to be very good in the next couple of years.
