Some big variables with this job: is Commonwealth prioritizing LH wrestling over others and what is the preapproved salary range? Obviously they're not going to hire a sitting D1 coach and can't pay what the big boys pay. But is it enough to draw a hungry, young assistant looking to get 3-5 good years before jumping ship? I just don't know how much longer any of the four PASSHE D1 wrestling programs can survive. Yes, even Lock Haven.

My sense is that the triads are not prioritizing different schools in athletics. Bloom's program has declined on its own.

Keep in mind that there are only 77 D1 wrestling HC jobs. They should be able to get quality applicants. I hope the list does not include any LHU assistants.

Yes, there are existential concerns for all 4 D1 programs but LHU seems to be flying high. Two out of the last 3 MAC conference championships, devastated by injuries in 2023/24 but still finished 27th at the NCAA's. Depending on the ranking service the incoming class is ranked 16/20 and I think it's actually better than that. A whole lot of support. including apparently Bashar Hanna.

Intermat has two articles about the opening and the Bloom program. You just have to subscribe for a premium membership for a month ($10). I'm tired of paying fees for everything. I just subscribed and cancelled to read 2 articles about Lock Haven's team. If anyone reads these articles. let me know what it says. Thanks in advance.

Your turn to buy a round. I guess you read what I read: May 8th, head coach Marcus Gordon resigned. And Hughes on the list of potential replacements.

          John Hughes

This name would make sense to those who follow the Bloomsburg program as John Hughes’ twin brother, Russ, has been on the Bloomsburg staff since 2016. Could the brother join forces to lead the Huskies going forward? Since this would be John’s first college head coaching gig, having his twin brother so familiar with the landscape of the school and athletic department would be a huge bonus.

I will sometime this weekend. I'm curious. We read the same thing then but why didn't Bloom - CU make an announcement about it for several weeks?

Perhaps there is a private personnel issue or maybe they were considering options. Is it a coincidence that two months after Stutzman is out, Gordon resigns? Did Gordon resign before his contract was up? It is curious that the advertisement for a new coach states Completing this search is contingent upon available funding. Is that placed in every ad or are they really concerned about funding the CU deficit with their reserves?

Bloom coaches who retire generally get some school announcement, but not those who resign or don't get a contract extension. I think that is for the former employee's benefit. I have heard the AD say he is committed to D1 wrestling, and the ad is for a D1 program.

                Is Russ Houck available?

He was my swimming instructor for a Physical Ed. class. He was a character.

According to Mitch Rupert on twitter there are some very interesting names to consider in the intermat article.

Former wrestling coach Mester hired at Davison High School.

Intermat describes the woeful state of Bloom Wrestling and how much money and resources it takers to compete at the D1 level and how concerned fans are about the situation and Gordon stepping down. Then it goes on to say they researched the situation and found that Bloom is re-focusing on Wrestling and will be increasing the salary for the new coach. It's a positive spin. It says there is renewed support and "new and significant donors." This sounds like hearsay to me. We shall see. In the second article, the list of potential applicants includes John Hughes, Kerry Regner, Steve Mytych, Michael Kemerer, Hayden Hidlay, Chance Marsteller, and John Stutzman. Again, that seems like speculation to me.

Still seems like nobody knows what is going on. They are accepting applications until July 11.

Mytych was on the staff before. Hughes has a brother on the staff. Regner from Ville. Hidlay from down the road in Lewistown, Kemerer at Brown might want to get closer to home, Marsteller at LHU. It doesn't excite me much.

I wouldn't doubt an increase in donors. They did get some big money for athletics in recent years and who knows. They lost out on coaches in the past who wanted to run camps and keep the money, so maybe that policy changed. Who knows, you opened your wallet to read a story.

Bloom will have a new OC an DC this year. DC is now the director of football operations at Cornell. It's been difficult to keep assistant coaches the last few years.

That’s too bad given that the defense has been the better half of the team for most of Sheptock’s tenure. Curious if they’ll promote one of the other assistants or go for an outside hire.

I believe the only other full time defensive coach was hired last month. They don't have many part timers left either. Job was posted July 1st.

Ouch. Late in the cycle to do a good search. I draw some hope in the fact that (to paraphrase what someone pointed out in the coaching carousel thread) there are a bunch of LB/DB/DL coaches around the league who are presumably looking to move up the ladder. Maybe one of them decides to take a crack at it.
