Reality is the coaches just miss on many of the high school recruits. They aren't nearly as good at this level as their film suggested a year ago. Add to it the academic issues, legal items, etc., and I'd venture a solid percentage are essentially told to enter the Portal. If they are getting any scholarship money, that is only a one-year (at a time) thing. It gets pulled all the time.

    The dead weight needs removed.
I'm not saying I disagree with you.

But I think you could also be discrediting the importance of "coaching" in that regard. To your point, "the perception is it is always the players leaving on their own." That means the truth is coaches are moving on from players very quickly. Not sure that exactly speaks highly of their "coaching" ability when it comes to working with and developing players. I feel like the same way we hammer the student athletes for helping to create a transient world of college athletics, the coaches need to be held just as responsible for that.

Using a local example and not saying anything otherwise, I'd rather see Joe work his tail off to get the absolute most out of Dolan Waldo and grow and develop him into the player everyone assumed he could be. Sometimes that takes work and time. That shows coaching ability. Says far less about coaches these days, in my opinion, if they are just good at "hitting" on guys coming in from the portal on one-year deals. But fans and donors everywhere expect instant and immediate success. So coaches simply become a product of the environment that keeps the checks coming.

      "Probably". Great analysis Dick Vitale...

It was as good as my analysis all year that your team wouldn't make the tournament.

          What about Markus Frank?

          He's the main attraction.

Well, if true takes a lot of wind out of my previous statements. They've always seemed to have a good basketball culture there, so I'm not sure why there suddenly would be a problem other than the season went south this past year. I do know Chris Fite is a class individual, and I would have no problem with having my son play for him if I had one. The first three leaving were not really a surprise to me because they were probably not going to see a lot of playing time next season and I think they could see the writing on the wall. When you're coming off an 8-20 season where you've given up more than 90 points in 10 games and into the 80s in several others, I think it's pretty fair to see that the coaches are unlikely to stand pat. In past years, you've usually seen one or two players at Ship really take leadership on the team, and there didn't seem to be a lot of that this year. It was a schizophrenic and maddening team in a lot of respects. They'd play a good first half and you'd think it was coming together, and then it was like they forgot everything the second half. Allen surprises me in that it's unusual to see a redshirt who has never played a quarter at the school depart, especially when he likely would have a clear path to playing next year. But it's a different world we live in nowadays, and who knows what is next down the road? The days when you could count on having a team around for a few years seem to be over.

Well, some guys have had him leaving Ship ever since he played 4-5 games for us, so I guess we'll just wait and see. I can't say anything would really surprise me. And being blunt about it, while most of our players this year seem to be decent kids and I wish them well wherever they go, Frank is one of the few that would be a huge loss from a basketball standpoint. Whippen made progress during the year and would be valuable for his size. Ship didn't go 8-20 by overwhelming the PSAC with superior talent. I just try to have fun watching my team play basketball, but it's getting harder to do.

              • Ship should have some monies to restock roster . 8 of 15 players have left program( 1 graduated as junior & moved on ) Hopefully Ship recruits well and program avoids another dismal season .

Joe recruited Frank pretty hard out of high school. I'm sure he would try again if the opportunity presented itself.

If I were betting, I'd bet Frank stays at Ship.

Looks as if they have two good freshmen coming in with Smith and Dorsey. Good height and athletic skills.

I'd agree. Ship didn't make the conference tournament so they've been done for a long time now. You'd think those going would be gone by now.

                        But, you never know.

                          This is big one.

Very skilled, strong (6'9") big with two years' eligibility remaining.

I’ll actually miss that kid. He was quite entertaining and really should have played more, although we’ve said that about others too.
