But yes, you feel sorry for the athletes. I always think of Malone about 6 years ago just shutting down football in 24 hours. Students lost scholarships and had to drop out of school. Sad.
The goal of adding football wasn't to win games. That's what made it feasible.

Not surprising given they got busted for (allegedly) doing the same thing with international students.

You'd think a university run by a shady bathhouse mogul would raise eyebrows - especially after the Department of Education stuck it on a watch list. But no... they were small school CFB's Cinderella darling for the last five years, smh.

If you look at their brief schedule history it's one of absolutely brutal travel, criss-crossing the country week after week, without making any geographic sense other than hunting for their next paycheck.
Going off their all-time schedule on the site below they've played games in 22 different states since 2021, with zero home games.

They don't have home games because then they'd have to lease a field and pay teams to come to them. Same reason they don't have a weight room or athletic trainer. Kinda nullifies the point of having a football team.

Good news is though that LU accepts CashApp and Venmo for the $500 deposits they charge athletes for "summer tuition."

It's frustrating to see a program like this achieve "darling" status with the college football world. They weren't founded to be a legitimate competitor - though I do feel for the athletes that were preyed upon.
Where are you getting that people see them as a scrappy underdog story? Maybe that's how they were viewed when they were first starting out and people were rooting for them to use those first couple awkward seasons to legitimize themselves, but now that they've been around for a while and established their current reputation, I haven't seen anything other than contempt for them.

I also have contempt for the teams that schedule them. People shouldn't have to pay tickets unless they are calling it a comedy instead of an athletic contest. This reminds me of NDSU hosting Oak Hills in men's basketball. The tape that I saw made it look like you (who I've never met), me and three other random people could hold our own with them. A D1 school should not have a team that isn't even D3 or NAIA on their schedule.

They've had a fair amount of supporters on this board throughout the last several years.

Even saw a YouTube comment tonight from someone referencing "D2 fans on a message board wishing for their success" that was posted a few weeks ago.

Maybe that's changed - but that's what I was referencing.

Fair enough. I haven't seen any of that, but it's also likely I'm not in the same circles that you are.

When I was putting together the non-conference master thread for this season, the reaction to a school scheduling Lincoln was usually some kind of disgust. The LSC board was unhappy when Kingsville scheduled them, the GLIAC board was unhappy when Davenport scheduled them. Admittedly the GSC board didn't say that much when UWA scheduled them, but I guess they can't really be picky with scheduling right now. The FCS subreddit had a thread for when Idaho State thrashed them too, and the majority of the comments on there are extremely critical of Lincoln.

I do agree they've had supporters on here previously, and maybe fans who only follow FBS regard them just with some bemusement, but from what I've seen, I think they've burned through the majority of any goodwill small school fans have had for them by now.

They must be getting them confused with Lincoln (PA) or Lincoln (MO). Otherwise this seems completely false.

Absolutely! It is just like Ferris State scheduling NAIA Rio Grande (in their first year of football in over 50+ years) this season. In no way should that even be a regular season game. It is just a waste of everyone's time and money.

I get that many D1's don't want to play Ferris, and Ferris has a hard enough time finding D2's to play them, but still, do better!

The comment was referring to D2 fans hoping Lincoln's success would drive interest in other California schools to add football - which as ridiculous as that sounds are conversations I've had and seen on this board before.

Granted - it was on the now defunct GNAC board and is also not reflective of the entire D2 population, but the comment wasn't wrong.

I've also had conversations on this board where people have argued that Lincoln is in fact a D2 school (because a FootballScoop incorrectly identified them as such) and with some other D2 people who were defending their school scheduling them.

It's good to see people are seeing the grift - but it wasn't always that way.

The more I read into it - the more I see your perspective. The sentiment has definitely shifted against Lincoln in the greater college football world - which is good to see. The YouTube video in which the comment was made was all about how much of a scam Lincoln is (and had some insane evidence that not even I was aware of, like coaches collecting rent from players).

The original discussion was on the GNAC board which no longer exists, and I've had some conversations with fans of D2 schools that have scheduled Lincoln where they've defended the game. Personally, as desperate as my school is for wins - I would hope we never give a program like Lincoln an opportunity. I'd rather lose another game.

Part of the problem is there was a FootballScoop article that incorrectly labeled Lincoln as a D2 school, and some people around here took it and ran with it and couldn't be convinced otherwise.

I like to think of myself as one who wants integrity in higher education (as hilarious of a statement as that is), so schools like Lincoln really grind my gears.

If it's over, I'm honestly surprised it took this long. It's a school with I think one actual building and around 500 students. I was covering the old GNAC schools (C Washington and W Oregon) for D2Football back in 2021 when they were lumped in with the Independents. CWU beat them 92-0, and they took a knee for pretty much the entire fourth quarter:

                          https://wildcatsports.com/sports/foo.../boxscore/6513

I don't think I have written so much about a single non-playoff game before or since, and it was mostly an angry rant about how ill-conceived the program looked, especially when there were plenty of models of how to start a program and what was necessary to do it. I feel really bad for those kids - they all got taken for a ride, a very bumpy and dangerous ride.

Do better? How can they (and others) You don't think that they are trying? They're not the only ones. 2 weeks ago only 1 team in the GLIAC had a game. GV even played a "JV" game vs a Comm. Coll. on Sunday just to keep a bit active. Many are frustrated that many D2 teams either duck or just won't play other teams. And it's not always about money. Most times the big boysoffer to pay and still they refuse. This isn't true for all teams/conf. But it is true for too many.

FWIW, GV also played Lincoln (Ca) a few years back to get a game.

That makes sense. I'm not surprised people on the GNAC board were supporting them. Given their situation in 2021, I imagine any football team on the West Coast with even an inkling of D2 aspirations would've been welcomed with open arms.

For better or for worse, as long as there's teams that need OOC games in the middle of the season, or teams in the middle of Nowheresville that can't get anyone else to come out for a home game, or just teams that want a quick win and some extra ticket revenue, Lincoln will be there to fill that void. I think (and hope) that the incidents with Davenport and West Alabama will make more teams think twice about scheduling them, but I doubt they're going away anytime soon.

I get where you're coming from, however, at least Rio Grande is a (relatively) credible NAIA institution. It's really not that much different from a GLIAC school having to schedule one of the Wisconsin D3 state schools in football (even if some of the UW state colleges are as good as a D2 program talent-wise).
