The game-day atmospheres between the two are polar opposites. Hate to say it but SRU is lively. It's pretty rocking up there. IUP is, well, kind of lame.

We aren't the best audience to answer this question. We already like the product and attend whenever possible so our opinions will have bias. So, as the Groundhog said above, ...
THE ROCK gets the community involved: most home games have a theme, Sept. 22 Viilagefest, Sept 29, Military Appreciation and Hall of Fame (Athletic)

I also think the 6:00 Kick is good (although I would prefer 4). The 6PM kick allows people to get stuff done in the day and then they can go to game.

Fighting Scot thinks there will 7k for the home opener I doubt it, Labor day weekend and a 1:00 kick, attendance numbers will be down.

And let's not forget the tailgating: it is not just for Homecoming it is for the all home games. The policies are straight forward and I'm unaware of any problems created by it; it creates a true college environment and believe or not I would say 3/4 of the tailgaters are not college students.

Growing up in District 6 and living in District 6, people would rather go to Penns Manor/Homer Center Friday night game than any game on Saturday at IUP.

      Fixed that for ya.

It would have to be initiated by IUP. A real effort incorporating quantitative and qualitative by a creditable organization. That's what I'm saying. If it were important enough they would do it. If it's not, they won't.

That's the state worker mentality you ran into. In my experience working at both public and private schools, the PA state schools are the most obtuse I've experienced. The workforce have absolutely no sense of the greater goals of the university and how their work can contribute. So many have their job descriptions memorized and approach their work with a drone mentality. The unions have also sucked the budgets dry. Decades of successfully getting 20% higher salaries has eliminated all budget line items that could fund something remotely discretionary.

When I talk with friends who work at the state schools they're always jealous that I can attend one conference a year and my department has a budget to pay for professional development. But when it comes down to it if I add my budget dollars to my salary it's coincidentally close to what my counterparts at the state schools are paid for similar work.

Another example is one time a PSAC coach said "I can't believe they had the nerve to ask me to donate to the school." My response was, "Would you rather have an extra $70 in your paycheck or an extra $1,000 in your department budget?"

No, you should be credited for what you did. I was involved (actually led) a similar effort waaay back in the 80's. I worked with a guy named Ron Thomas in the University Relations dept., basically the PR arm, and we adminstered quantitative image research among the student body and the faculty with a component about the football program. It served as the baseline and they replicated the studies for many years after that. We worked with the then President Dr. Welty who was a big supporter of athletics. Back then there was a whole promotional program for football and their slogan, which was later met with derision, was "Penn State in '88." Of course, it never happened. Some ancient history.

SRU88 has some good points. As for many selecting the Heritage Conference over an IUP game ... no doubt.

There is some general disdain in the community toward IUP. I think a lot of people around here wish a Berlin Wall type divider was built around the campus. It happens in most college towns but it is pretty strong here. I think most locals view IUP as a necessary evil for the economy -- one that also causes a lot of problems in town.

Does that carry over to the athletic support issues? No doubt.

Let's not forget the ticket prices whether some of you want to believe it or not. Famlies of 4-5 aren't dropping $100 on an IUP basketball game. Not happening. The hoops attendance is in a free fall state over the past few years.

I agree the reported numbers were low last year for football. However, the atmosphere was still pretty lame. But, I think that is the goal at the end of the day.

So in the 90s, attendance was much higher, crowds were rowdier, and there was tailgating in the band lot. If the games would even match the 90s people would be pretty happy. But the combination of legal problems / fights with players, and then the Lou Tepper era (and the Atwater era) ended it, and it is probably not coming back anytime soon. They can make improvements, but the attendance of the 90s is not coming back. I often talk to alumni, and very few of the 2005 -2010 alum care much about football.

Without the University, Indiana would be a bigger version of Clymer with no future.

I'd prefer to chase the community (they spend the money).

No doubt but regardless the issues exist. Remember, while IUP won big in the 90s the program was a loose cannon off the field. Did that turn a lot away ... maybe. Who knows. My buddies from the 90s who went to other schools still think the football program here is some criminal enterprise. Reputations take a long time to sway.

Like I said we're all biased because we enjoy the games.

I'm in the target age range IUP needs badly (35-44). Section C isn't getting any younger. I ask local friends to the games all the time. I get that weird 'I gotta mow the yard' look routinely. That's kind of the perception of the game day experience to the outsiders.

Ashland will beat IUP and IUP will lose at Adamson as usual. Creating a disappointing season for the hawks.
