That's not "Duzz math." I don't agree with the decision to go for 2 there, but's a huge analytics thing now. If you watch the NFL enough, teams are doing that a ton when down 2 touchdowns after the 10 minute mark of the 4th quarter. Credit Narduzzi for adapting and diving into a new age of football. He hired a 31 year old whiz kid OC who wants to snap the ball every 15 seconds, and he's using analytics to decide games.
You can hate the call, but that's not really a knock on Narduzzi. Football is shifting that direction. To be fair though, the 2-pt try when the cut it to 27-19 was there. They just didn't hit it. The receiver was wide open.

Pitt obviously made neither and they still won - somehow. But that's the context for why teams do that.

A lot of things have to go your way to make a comeback like that and missing that first 2 pt play just compounds the difficulty. They were fortunate. Hitting a 50+ yard explosive play for their last TD was huge. If they lose 27-25 because they didn’t have time to mount a final drive, people would be screaming for Narduzzi’s head today.
So, you get the 8 first and then the 7 wins it for you.
Who knows.

The old theory is never go for two until you have to.
