He bought himself some time last year beating Pitt and winning a bowl game but if he struggles in new Big12-Pac-12-old big east this year he'll be out the door unless WVU's money issues keep him around another year.

It's not as simple as writing a 20 million dollar check to make a guy go away anymore. You now need that money as part of your 21 million dollars in revenue sharing. So would you rather have just an okay coach, but have money to get better players? Or would you rather make that coach go away and not have money to get better players? Those are the questions schools now have to ask.
The fan base wasn't real crazy about him when he got hired. He's had a rough stay in Morgantown.
Blowing that late lead Saturday sure didn't help matters.

He got blasted for not going for it on a 4th and 1 two years ago near midfield and up a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Comparatively, he went for it on 4th down multiple times in that game on Saturday, specifically in the 2nd half. The possession they scored the TD on to go up 34-24, the touchdown pass came on a 3rd down where they tossed one to the end zone. Two years ago, he probably plays that more conservative. On their final possession on the third down play that Pitt sacked Garrett Greene, he wasn't playing it close to the vest. He wasn't just trying to get Pitt to burn timeouts. He gets a first down there, he wins the football game. He tried to throw the football. Certainly didn't coach a perfect game (nobody ever does), but overall, he coached to win the football game.
Even on the plays that Pitt made on the final 2 drives. The pass Holstein threw to Dejean Reynolds was thrown into triple coverage and he came down with it in the endzone. Two of those long runs Holstein had, WVU guys had hands on him but couldn't bring him down.
It's always easy to blame the coach. That entire game was back and forth. Unfortunately for WVU, the final 5 minutes resulted in Pitt making all the plays and their players making none.

Buckle up, here we go. Our first player hold out from unmet NIL promises.

When the athletic departments at each school have the ability to engage in direct compensation via the revenue sharing model, and those payments are all above the line and transparent, it will be a far greater arrangement for everyone. This individual was offered a loose price for his services at UNLV by somebody unaffiliated with the university. He was probably advised poorly and the "agreement" was not iron clad or legally binding.
Again, I never supported the idea of paying all these individuals. But I'm in favor of what will prevent stories like this and stabilize things for most universities.

There's a second side to this story emerging. Some are reporting after this hot start he was demanding a 'pay raise' and threatening to leave if he wasn't paid more.
Either way, he can quit, take a redshirt and hit the open market.

I’m also curious whether or not Sluka will be at UNLV next season. I can’t imagine all of his teammates supporting this move and welcoming him back with open arms.

- After a decent 2022 season, he asked for a crap load of NIL money. Pitt gave it to him.
- He had a just okay 2023 season and he essentially asked for Pitt to give him every additional dollar of NIL money they had left. Pitt gave it to him.
- After the spring, he said he wanted more money (a 3rd time). Pitt said "no," and he entered the portal. But his deal was monetarily legitimate and there was no clause that required him to be at Pitt to keep all the Pitt NIL dollars. So he took Pitt's money and transferred 48 hours after tweeting about his role as a mentor to the young guys and that he wanted to be remembered as a hometown hero.
- He has not been playing good football and the report is Prime didn't actually give him much NIL money at all. Good riddance. He can go play average defensive end for all the Coach Prime fanboys.

Major college football is the biggest cesspool of any sport. There are layers to this stuff -- many exist well below what the average fan can see.
It's hilarious to me a college QB, during the season, can threaten to walk if the school doesn't pony up. They call that blackmail. Great teammate lol.
But, as the old saying goes, if somebody is handing you money ... take it.

I’m sure there will be some resentment toward him, but the bulk of the anger is probably at whoever dropped the ball in giving him what he was promised.
The bolded words there are what is troubling to me. In some of these cases, we're talking millions of dollars. That doesn't work in 'promises'. When you're dealing in numbers with a couple commas, there are no longer 'handshake' deals.
You would surely think these superstar mercenaries (and their legal people) demand this money to be in their bank account at the time they sign the dotted line. Or, don't sign.
The redshirt rule -- as in the UNLV case -- gives these guys a free out (essentially). They can play 3 games and still redshirt.
I have no objection to these kids cashing in. These college stars have value. Adding value costs money.
