As late as that all went down they are lucky they were able to even find any non-conference games.

It's a great look for a 'D1' school to open the season on the road at a D2 school.

And at D1 they have an extra 12th game so 13 weeks to choose from.

Also, that October 19 opening was their Gannon game. As of today, Gannon has not yet scheduled a game, so either they're allowed so many games against non-D1 or Gannon is giving them a proverbial middle finger.

I don't think we'll see those two play anytime soon. It would be a bad look for Mercyhurst now to lose to Gannon in anything.

My guess is once Mercyhurst is a couple years removed (with more built up, higher quality rosters) they'll all the sudden want to play Gannon in sports again.

I do suspect IUP and Mercyhurst will continue to play in men's basketball. Joe and Gary are very close friends. Mercyhurst can count the game and IUP can use it as an exhibition (or they can both count it).

And this is an argument for why schools should not be allowed to move up to D1 without giving at least one year's notice.

The WAC football schools are going through the same thing with Stephen F Austin's move to the Southland on even shorter notice (and, to a lesser extent, Seattle and Grand Canyon moving to the WCC) and that might put the WAC in danger of dissolving..

          • That game against Montana St might be as bad as Duquesne at TCU a few years ago. It's going to be in the running for the least competitive game of the year. Basically like if Clarion or Edinboro played North Dakota St.

Mercyhurst scheduling Buffalo St instead of playing Edinboro at home does pretty much say they aren't interested in losing to the local D2 schools.

            • I hope they go winless and this move bankrupts the school.

No kidding…the NEC with all its D2 defectors and barely-D1 programs is a D1 conference in name only. The PSAC’s best teams would be in the top half of that conference from day one.

                • Sorry to ask, but who is the best football school in the NEC, and how would that school fare against say IUP, The Rock, WCU or Shep?

                  Honest question. Thank you.

I agree with you 100% there ctrabs74 ! For instance, this game will not count for Wheeling and Frostburg St when it comes to qualifying for the DII Playoffs, whether they beat the D-I school or not.

At best Mercyhurst, right now, would be picked 5th in the West.

The football program is about to see a few more lean years.

                        • November 9... let's play D2 Lincoln instead of D2 IUP. All they are trying to do is put wins in the book to try and attract higher quality players. They suck and will continue to suck. Dumbasses don't know how to budget and then built of that new housing and as nobody to fill it. They truly think going D1 is going to fix that problem... WRONG!!!

I agree. The abrupt move to D1 was irresponsible and cynical. I hope the publicity they derive from it is all negative.

I hope they go broke and close.

Oh, I remember working that Duquesne at TCU game a few years ago. And, yes, it was as bad as advertised. For some reason, I thought they tweaked the clock rules in the second half because it was that massive of a domination by a (then) mediocre TCU squad. Although, it probably couldn't be any worse than, say, Robert Morris losing a few years ago to a team which doesn't even exist anymore.
