Entertain me here ... I don't see any connection between Shippensburg and SEPA.

I like the town of Shippensburg. But, that's about as rural as one can get.

Are you referring to their student body perhaps being more from the Philly side of PA?

Culturally. When you cross the mountains, the towns and buildings look different. Ship definitely pulls more from the east than they do from the west. They barely exist in SWPA and only then its from a direct connection, even though many have heard of Dickinson and Gettysburg colleges.

The campus is one building. I would be shocked and actually dissapointed if this is true. I can't even see how they could be D3. They have no facilites around their school. Their football team has to walk to practice at a stadium a mile away.

Directionally, I would consider Shippensburg to be more South than East or West.

They do recruit from SEPA and have a strong connection to Philadelphia schools but I think they are more centrally-oriented. They largely get their student body from the middle 150 miles of PA, from top to bottom.

They've made recruiting the Philly area a priority for several years. I think a lot of people would be surprised by the number of students they pull from that area. Of course a lot of the western schools are making greater efforts in the East now. We've noticed Slippery Rock and others at recruiting fairs in our area the past few years. You never would have seen that before the enrollments started to drop. Ship has also picked up efforts in nearby states such as Maryland and New Jersey.

            • A school that fits geographically but is currently D3, small and private. Just off I-79 in Meadeville is Alleghaney College.
Nice Football Stadium and they draw well, Great fit for Boro, Gannon & SRO, Not bad for Carion either.
Don't know if their is any interest but just tossing it up in the air.

There's several potential schools in the PAC.

Westminster was the last one to try (from memory). I think they played in the GLIAC for a year or so.

I'm probably remembering all that incorrectly but they did come up for a brief period.

Who knows where this is going at this point.

Allegheny has 1,500 students. They're an old fashioned liberal arts college. Not only a bad fit but they wouldn't want to be associated with state schools.

                  • I think a better option than anything mentioned would be if Mansfield reinstated football.

                    • Any talk or chance of Mansfield starting d2 football again? Just wondering

Correct. Allegheny is in the $70k per year range (retail).

Their alumni all thing they are actually Ivy League. Very different cultures compared to us perceived lowly state schools.

From my recollection, the student body at Shippensburg tends to lean more towards the Philly side than the Pittsburgh side, but I seem to recall a fair number of students from Metro DC as well.

Well, if Point Park can somehow work their way into D2 despite not having any on-campus "home" facilities other than their on-campus gym used by the volleyball team, then there's at least there's a precedent for D2 membership despite no on-campus athletic venues. Point Park Basketball plays at CCAC in the North Side, soccer plays at Highmark Stadium on the South Side/Station Square, baseball has their "home" field in Green Tree and softball's home games are played in Kennedy Township. That said, I don't see how Lackawanna could even become an NAIA school, let alone a D2 school, given that most of their student body is based at Pierce's campus in Philadelphia, from what I can gather.

That would be great but I just don't believe that PASSHE folks value athletics as anything other than entertainment & tradition. They have glorified club football right now and I bet that it doesn't affect enrollment any different than a struggling D2 program. That region is just so depressed in economics and population I'm not sure they have the engagement to sustain what you need to have a program that can compete with the rest of the PSAC East.

That one season where Mansfield was good was a lot of fun. In this dogfight conference, one sudden upstart season can really disrupt things.

Classify under the 'message board babbling' category, but ... what if we haven't heard about any additions because there won't be any additions? What if there will be addition by subtraction and another team folds (thus balancing the ledger, per se).

If I've learned one thing following this league for decades ... it's that nothing should ever surprise you. Who actually believed Mercyhurst would give a no-notice 'F You' to the league and bail in April?

We have a lot of schools hanging on for dear life. We have two institutions that each feature three varsity football teams. I'm just waiting for the day to log in here and see so-and-so has announced they are dropping football. Uncle Sam's PA posse isn't going to close a campus down. Hell, Cheyney and Mansfield are still open. But, I could see one of our schools dumping football.
