  • Shippensburg discovered the antidote for a dormant offense -- welcome the Cheyney Wolves to Heiges.

The Raiders get their first victory of 2024 in the final minutes of January, 116-71. They had 100 with seven minutes left, and settled for only tying the school single-game scoring record because the bench crew couldn't shoot straight for the final five minutes. Seven guys hit double figures -- including a team-high 20 from Ty Holsopple, who knew a career highlight when he saw one.

John Chaney's old team did not stop anyone in the lane all night.

Somebody in the PSAC ought to offer Cheyney's Nate Hoter an exile from his basketball purgatory. The kid, a 6-2 freshman, quietly picked away at Ship the entire night, closing with 30 points.

    • ESU stole one at Mansfield tonight 80-79. Warrior turnovers and the inability to stop driving guards made this much more difficult then the oddsmakers could imagine...ESU has to find a way to get more rim defense if they want a deep playoff run this year. Holding onto the ball would be a help too...3 guys had 4 or more TOs...Shepherd blew out Kutztown and will be looking to avenge a home loss to ESU on Saturday...Kudos to Millersville for their win over Lock Haven. Gives ESU a bit of breathing room at the top of the East...ESU, Lock Haven and Millersville all clinched PSAC postseason berths tonight...

Glad to see this year's Ship team get an opportunity to have a night for itself, but it's hard not to feel a little sad about the present state of a Cheyney program that was once one of the premier small-college teams in the country.

        • Talk about bad officiating, if I'm LHU I'm beyond pissed about the officiating at the end of the game. Anyone else catch that clusterf#$&.

For years I could not handle Reynolds at SRU. Bar none Stizel is the most annoying, grating, most whining coach for a guy who can't get a once storied program into the tourney.

He's the kind of dude you love to beat, but he does usually put together a pretty good squad.

            • ESU gives Jeff Wilson win #400 with a 73-59 victory over Shepherd. Justin Paz joined the 1,000 point club with a 3 pointer early in the contest. Lakeem McAliley scored 20 points in the win, his 6th straight game of 20 or more points. There was a lot to celebrate today in the win, but Coach Wilson told his team that the one thing he really wants for them is to earn some rings. He's put together arguably his deepest team in his tenure at ESU. Stats don't tell the entire story, but he has 2 players in the top 7 in FG% (McGlone and McAliey), and 4 Warriors are in the top 20 in FT%. Lakeem Mcaliley is the only Warrior in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding in the PSAC, but ESU is 2nd in the PSAC in scoring, 2nd in free throw makes and attempts, 2nd in turnover margin, 3rd in rebounding and 4th in FG%. The key to their success is a total team effort.

Most who know Jeff know how much of a class guy he is, and you can't help but root for a guy like that to be successful. Should be a fun ride in February!!

              • Ship looked pretty good yesterday in getting past Bloomsburg 88-83. Especially notable was the Raiders' work on the glass -- 58-21 rebounding advantage, 31-3 on the offensive glass.

Still a very erratic ballclub. But Kyle Whippen has grown into a pretty solid PSAC big man. Markus Frank began looking like the December version of himself in the second half, penetrating and going to the line. And Timmy Conner has emerged as the perimeter shooter they look to.

Too little, too late for this year, but they'll all be back next season, as will Donovan Hill (17 rebounds yesterday, though he still hasn't rediscovered his shooting touch) and Michael Dunn.

Bloomsburg stays in it through some outstanding long-range bombing by Jagger Dressler and Louie Wild. They were nailing some threes with hands in their face.

Bloom playing without their 2 big guys 6th year Elmore and Nelson. Also transfers Gordon and Henderson missing since holiday break. That's about all the height on the team.

Question: How did that Clarion forward not end up at Ship (he's from Ship). He's a nice player.

How did Carter not end up at IUP? Sometimes a kid just wants to go elsewhere, or maybe got more love somewhere else. Ship should have a couple nice guards coming in next year, and Chris Fite will definitely be in search of some wide bodies.

Looked as if Coach Fite went back to a little more structured offense and they seemed to be getting some good looks. Was nice to see Conner nailing some, although it would also be nice to see him get a little bigger so larger guards can't back him in. That's a big problem with the overall Ship defense this season. Hill is a puzzle. I don't know if he's just rusty from not playing much competitive ball for a year and a half, or he's just tight in the games right now. He missed at least 3-4 bunnies Saturday (I've never seen a Ship team miss as many layups as they have this year), which he obviously has the ability to convert. He did pull down a lot of boards, as did Whippen, and Frank was relentless on the offensive end in the second half.

It didn't hurt that perennial Ship nemesis Jake Nelson was in a cast and didn't play at all. Won't be sorry to see him and Louis Wild leave Bloom after this season.

Ah, the Jeremy Thomas Question. (And he went for 26 and 9 last night against UPJ.)

That is a classic case of being overlooked on a great high school team. Thomas was always the third option behind 6-8 Anthony Smith, now a DE for Minnesota, and Jayden Statum, who has battled injury for three years but seems to be slowly emerging at Susquehanna. Healthy, Statum was a mid-major talent at point guard.

That, plus Thomas missed most of his junior year with a broken leg. That, plus the kid is an exceptional student (and person) who was looking at Ivy schools.

So a lot went into that, and Chris Fite's loss is most definitely Clarion's gain.

If (I'd guess a big 'if') he stays at Clarion he's going to be a monster in this league. He has three more years left after this season.

Looks as if Chris has picked up a good one from Carlisle for next year.

                                Pretty good back story, too.
