  • The IUP management shakeup is really shocking campus leadership in PASSHE. Some good coverage without a paywall: https://triblive.com/local/regional/...ne-operations/

IUP has roughly 600 more students than Slippery Rock. The difference is that IUP has no financial reserves and SRU has roughly $45 million.

      I still don't know what student-centeredness means.

That is the best definition I've seen.

It does follow that the fewer students they have the more student-centered they can be, right? The days of students feeling lost in a bustling, mid-sized national university are over!

As I've said for the past couple years ... if you drive through campus on a Friday night -- and didn't know you were actually on campus -- you wouldn't even know it.

It is so different now compared to even just 15-20 years ago (half the size obviously). Totally different vibe today. The nice part, of course, for those of us who live in Indiana is the current students almost all live on or very near campus. It's not like the past where they'd be spread well in to town.

I did recently hear that (at least) one of the big, new-ish, fancy dorms isn't even going to open this Fall. Not enough heads for the beds.

I just wonder how much longer until most of our schools start to look like MEC schools (with like 80-some percent of the enrollment there as athletes).

            • Bobby Mo WR has closed his recruiting. In Twitter speak that means he's made his choice.

My guess is IUP is a longshot. He picked up several lower-level FCS offers the past two weeks.

There is the Dayjure Stewart factor, however.

None of these PUBLIC universities should ever be in this position.

                    Awesome!

It’s a shame D2 does not sponsor hockey.

The administrative expansion in the last 30-40 years has been in functions that don't directly interact with students. Any reductions will be in positions that can be absorbed or downgraded without compromising the student experience. Basically not cutting professors, student services, student affairs, and athletics without good reason.

To me it's also an oversight issue. The state was on autopilot and nobody noticed or intervened when IUP had a decade of continual budget shortfalls. Same for most every other PASSHE school except West Chester. The state has also done this with the Turnpike. Enormous debt and a nebulous path to repay. Wait until Millennials and Gen Z grow up and their generation doesn't play the lottery because they can get their gambling rocks off with online betting and online casinos.

GenX isn’t playing the lottery as much either. In the rare timesI get dragged into a casino I play the penny slots for 2 hours with 20 bucks.

Really? Is that what Driscoll means when he repeats "student-centeredness" ad nauseam?" The translation is that we are going to make administrative cuts but don't worry we will make non-student-facing cuts first.

He uses it as if it were a slogan. I don't think it conveys meaning to the general public and I don't think it gives an energized impetus for the direction of the university

What IUP needs is to define itself for the future. That actually requires the non-student-facing staff that he just let go.

IUP has not done well in regards to making the bureaucracy easy for students to negotiate. Things like financial aid, the registrar, billing, those things make life easier for the students. As for defining itself, it should be academic affairs and the faculty doing that. IMHO the input from out of touch, sometimes incompetent admins have been a big part of the problem. You can’t define a university by administrative fiat. But thankfully I’ve retired last year so I don’t have to deal with it.

Right. And PASSHE isn't good at creating new academic programs. They tend to supplement what is already there and take way too long compared to private schools. Its also faculty expertise driven and not really market driven. Then they never really market individual programs. All PASSHE schools have a couple really great grad programs that fly under the radar because they don't market them individually - just "get your master's degree at XX University of Pennsylvania!". Unfortunately with enrollment declines and the slow roll of shifting many grad programs to asynchronous online (what the people want) a lot of these programs have disappeared or are targets for elimination.
