  • Mercyhurst just picked up another match for this season. The opponent... Montana State. It's an away game too, of course. The Lakers are about to be in for a very rude awakening.

I don't think it mattered to anyone when Cheyney dropped football.

Montana State vs. Mercyhurst is a ridiculous matchup.

LOL ... comes with the territory of being a 'D1' football program (that wasn't even a good D2 football program).

They were not good at anything in the few sports they had going. They were just wasting money and those kids were at a distinct disadvantage on the field of play. Their facilities were the worst. Did you ever attend a game there? Trust me it was the only time I was ever a bit embarrassed watching IUP stomp up and down the field. Against everyone else it’s enjoyable.

NCAA didn't kick them out. Nore did the PSAC. They chose to drop football then chose to drop athletics all together. You can say that they were forced into this decision by their financial and enrollment woes but it was still their choice.

So when the PSAC Commissioner stands up and says that Mercyhurst is the first PSAC member to chose to leave the conference, he's lying to you.

Cheyney didn't have money to pay for transportation to road games.

I suppose it can be called whatever one wants.

Cheyney didn't jump ship and leave the conference for another conference. They eliminated athletics altogether as part of their response to accreditation probation. Pretty big difference.

                        Correct.

I'd guess behind the scenes all focus is now on poaching Frostburg State.

Posted like somebody who never stepped on the campus and saw its shameful condition..,

They had no choice. There was no feasible way for the few sports they fielded to continue.

That's what they said, but the current president chose to eliminate athletics because he didn't like that it was a distraction from his goal to convert Cheyney to a school connecting Black students to corporate jobs through partnership agreements. If they came because of football, then they weren't there for the Cheyney-specific experience he was building.

Too many also only saw it as a budget luxury and modest PR vehicle instead of a way to get a few hundred students to choose Cheyney instead of another school. There are plenty of schools that fit NCAA athletics of all levels into very specific academic orientations. Clearly I'm against cutting athletics. Yes, you sacrifice some attention to class, but for Cheyney's core demographic, its an important way to help pay for school and attract students to a unique college experience over many other options.

You can rationalize the reason all you wish. But at the end of the day, they voluntarily left the PSAC by shuttering all their intercollegiate athletic programs. You can say it was a good idea and made financial sense all you want, but the bottom line was that it was their decision.

Well, if you're stuck on a sinking ship you have a choice of whether you want to get into the lifeboat or not, but I sincerely doubt you'd chose not to.
