  • People keep calling for Adam Dorrel. But the Coaching Tree of Mel hasn't done well away from NW. AD did well at NW but not so much at ACU and UCO so far. Tatum a bust. Jim S had minimal success at UCM but it really was a 1 QB success in Chessy. Can't remember the Coach that went to ASU (?) also had minimal success but none that took teams to consistent playoff runs or deep playoff runs.

Saying that to say....look outside. Take it from a Program that handed an Asst. Coach the HC job and ended up being the worse team in Kansas and missing the playoffs more in his 10 years (8 times) than the Gorillas did the entire time they had been in D2 and really going back to 1985.

But my hope is NW keeps RW. I like what he is doing.

I don't think AD is an elite head coach. Had he not had Wright as DC, I'm not sure we'd have won as much. He could recruit and call plays though and was more capable than Wright has been.

The best year that Jim S. had at UCM was in 2010. That was his first year and the Mules won two playoff games. All the players, including QB Eric Czerniewski the Harlon Hill Trophy Winner, were players recruited by the previous coach, Willie Fritz. During Jim's tenure the Mules were usually good, but not great. They did share the conference championship with NW a few years ago.

          • This is a tough situation for all parties and I was to just to digress how I see it from the middle point of view:

What has Rich Wright done as HC at NWMSU:
Led Bearcats to playoffs each year
Kept (from what I know) a clean program that is respected in the community
If anyone remembers the state of the program 30 years ago, we would be building Rich a throne

What has Rich Wright not done as HC at NWMSU
Not won a Championship --Excluding COVID Year, this Year 6 for Rich as HC - For Mel and AD, these were the glory years as HC, as they won national titles in Years 5 and 6 as HC. Year 6 was when I personally feel they had the best teams.
Instilled Offensive Confidence in Fans ---- For several years, fans have complained that we lacked enough explosiveness at WR and overall consistency as an offense

I see people reactions that the players are being attacked but haven't seen that on social media at all - I don't find them to be at fault

Side Question - When was the last time we lost two straight regular season games by double digits? Start of the Mel Era?

I think you are referring to Will Wagner?

After ASU he was a coordinator on WTAMU's staff and now is at Henderson State.

              • I never thought I would see a posting calling for a NW Missouri Coach to be fired and trending downwards.

Being a WT fan it has sucked the last 10 years not even sniffing a playoff berth.

We would be elated being a #7 seed and getting blown out the first round just to be back.

Hopefully Coach Lynn from Kearney can lead us back to the promise land.

I've been calling NW a #basketballschool since before covid. It was obvious where this was headed many moons ago. Then Rich carpet bombed the program by hiring Sturdy.

Willie Fritz proved what a great coach he is. Has had great success at Stephen F Austin and Tulane since leaving Central

                    • its the curse of the 3rd coach from the tree inbreeding.
                      Franchione to Broyles to Beck
                      Mel to AD to RW
yes I know Bostwick was there but unfortunately we will all never know how his teams would have done.

There gets to be just too much inbreeding or echo chamber unless you pull in people from the outside.

I think Peterson and RW will have a long talk after the season but as long as NW finishes around .500 RW will get a mulligan for this year but start next year on a very very warm seat.

                      • I felt like Beck's whole model of recruiting sort of fell behind the times at Pitt. Social media, then the portal changed things so much, and I think they were late to the party.

I wonder if the same is happening at NW.

                        • any hc is as good as his staff.
there's no one on it that can recruit at an elite level & no one that can run an offense, develop qbs, etc.
idk if rw is in an echo chamber w/ no one around him to tell him the truth but the results speak for themselves. he's certainly got plenty of shills itt carrying water for him.
reality is he's tanked this puppy & barring drastic action by him stat internally regardless of the yr this only ends one way.
                          Go Bearcats!
                          M-I-Z-Z-O-U!

This may be true but he has a long way to go to prove it. Nebraska Kearney not good. If he had stayed dont know? A coach on ACU staff that was let go. This second chance at UCM to be a head coach will determine his future as a head coach or not. Its to early. This year may be better than expected. Its just to bad that it looks like coach S left the program in distress. He needs another year or two before decisions need to be made. Just dont wait long and take the program under.

As bad as coach inbreeding can be, inbreeding at the AD level can also be a problem. That situation might keep the "good ole boy" club going and the same old worn-out ideas just get recycled. Before his passing, Jerry Hughes was the athletic director at UCM for 40+ years. Jerry did a wonderful job, but after 40 years it was past time for some fresh ideas. UCM hired a new AD from outside the program. He's young, high energy, proven fund raiser and brings fresh ideas to the athletic department.
