Its a total Catch-22. I just wish they would have waited to see what the pool of available options was before deciding. Unless the money truly isn't there.

Correct. He's becoming a big fish in the business really quickly.

He can pick and choose his next job -- and he'll pick one with a big bankroll.

      • Miami gets in, barely. They’ll be in Dayton for the First Four. According to Seth Davis they were the absolute last team to get in. If Dayton had pulled the upset in the Atlantic 10, Miami was out.

Which shows that regular season championships are virtually meaningless, which I'm sure all of us have known for quite some time now. This is especially true in the smaller conferences, where on occasion you'll see some team with a 13-16 record or something similar secure their conference's bid with a few wins in the tournament.

Such is life when you’re on the lower rungs of the D1 ladder. I don’t dig into the minutiae of the advanced rankings indexes, the different quads and all that, but Miami’s schedule, for a team that made the tournament as an at large, is historically bad. It’s been discussed of course, that they tried to get games and a lot of teams said no. In the end I’m glad they made it. The First Four isn’t the worst place to be. Somebody almost always comes out of it and makes a nice run.

That is incorrect info. The committee chair was interviewed after the bracket was revealed. He said Miami was never in doubt. They were in no matter what happened in their conference tournament. That was from his mouth on live TV.

Interesting. Obviously I did not watch that interview. Though putting them in the First Four doesn’t exactly jive with the idea that their spot was never in doubt.

The First Four is explicitly meant for the four lowest-seeded conference champs and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams. Keith Gill (the head of the selection committee, and Sun Belt commissioner, so not exactly a power conference stooge) specified that Miami was NOT the last team selected; they were selected ahead of the other at-large First Four teams (Texas, NC State, and SMU) on the basis of resume, but dropped to the last at-large seed on the basis of quality metrics.

Right, so they were first on the chopping block if Dayton or any other unexpected team had won their conference and stolen a bid. Their spot was absolutely in doubt until all the other conference tournaments played out.

edit: on second read I get it. They were seeded last, but in terms of who was the first to get bounced if say, Dayton won, it would not have been Miami.

Miami was clearly in but the committee always juggles teams around. Miami gets to basically play a home game in Dayton because of the juggling.

Was just going to say that. Playing in Dayton is a glorified home game for Miami. Its like Pitt playing in Johnstown. I do believe that will be a factor in them overcoming SMU.

                        • I think Texas’s selection is actually worse then Miami’s seeding. I probably would have bumped the Longhorns for SDSU; they might be qualitatively better, but they had too many losses for my taste.

The Mountain West only getting one bid is odd. SDSU and New Mexico are good teams. The Big East only got three bids. We’re honestly not far from every non P4 conference being one bid leagues.

The Big East only had four teams with winning records this year and Seton Hall is the only one that missed the cut. Maybe you could argue for them in the First Four over NC State because of the H2H win but most of the metrics that the committee uses see NC State as better overall.

Agree with you here. I think the First Four should be also-rans. Conference champions, even for the lowly NEC, should get in no matter what.

Actually, scratch that. First Four is stupid.
