Let's be clear about this: Undergrad acceptance rate is the single most useless metric in higher ed, followed closely by average SAT score of incoming freshmen; moreover, neither metric is applicable to research, mainly because undergrads aren't the ones driving research.

As for what NDSU's athletic department should do? It seems like investing heavily in basketball would be the smart play, but NDSU's athletic department is built around football. I'm hoping that the unexpected success this season will help boost attendance, but it is hard to beat the convenience of watching the games at home or in at a bar on ABC statewide every week - and, really, attendance isn't important to the bottom line at NDSU.

NDSU going from DII to DI was an obvious, though hotly debated, move. Moving to the FBS is not nearly so much of a slam dunk. For example, if the Mountain West was interested in being a more competitive FBS conference, they'd have invited NDSU. They did not and that showed me that their priorities don't align with NDSU's in any way, shape, or form.

With you 100% (20 years working in university administration). Right behind it are the misleading graduation and placement/employment rates.

Based on their draw it would’ve been pretty inexcusable to not make it to at least the semifinals. But I think they have a good shot tonight. I’ve never thought Drew Allar has lived up to the hype, but he’s been very good. He might need to play like a five star recruit tonight because I’m sure Notre Dame will make running the ball tough sledding.

As a fairly neutral observer leaning slightly toward wanting PSU to win, I really just want a close, entertaining game (I know, I know, we can’t want that, lol). I think the way these teams match up probably gives us the best chance of that among all the playoff games so far.

This is an interesting game, nationally. These two teams aren't overly liked outside of their immediate core fan bases. I don't put either at quite 'Columbus levels' but they aren't far behind.

I'm a neutral fan. I despise both of them. It's hard to watch and not cheer for somebody. I guess I'll lean toward Team Joe Pa.

I'd agree on the level of competition. PSU should certainly get challenged tonight. They've basically had a couple tune-up games.

I'm not blaming this one on Franklin. Allar was atrocious tonight. I thought to myself when Notre Dame punted there that they should run it and go for OT, because if they let Allar try to win it he'll force it and it'll get intercepted. Sometimes I really hate being right.

At least Berks County local kid Singleton had a great game on the national stage.

Allar has not been throwing it well this game…

Zero catches by PSU WRs the whole game and Allar forces a ball into coverage under pressure and gets it picked off. Lucky he didn’t have 3 picks since he was either missing throws or forcing throws all game. Run the ball there and hope they can get close to FG range.

Great game. I actually feel sympathy for Franklin today, never thought I’d say that. This one has to sting. Allar was really bad. I guess if you feel the need to pin this on James you could say he put too much trust in him at the end.

Marcus Freeman is one his way to being an elite coach, he’s already pretty close. To lose your home opener to Northern Illinois and wind up where they are is pretty remarkable.
