  • Re: Iup basketball

There is little the area can do to control off campus private parties when they are all on the same day, and with social media, everyone gets invited. It's a problem at most schools. The costs to bring in extra police is often funded by the state, but it is very expensive for the local communities.

Looks like one shooting was due to some sort of argument and the other was revenge for an alleged robbery.

The young man who was shot and killed, Carlos, was an IUP student. The 'alleged' (and arrested) shooter was not. He was a local with quite the rap sheet. Carlos was shot twice in the chest after there was supposedly a fist fight. The girl who was hit in this incident was hit during the fracas.

The other shooting took place near 12th and Philly. It seems to be more of a random run-in between two groups and the nutcase pulled out a gun, fired two warning shots in the air and then 3 shots at the victims.

The Cooper Beach incident (third) ... nobody was hit. That could have just been a drunk moron firing shots off at 230am.

The police force did a tremendous job getting both shooters in custody quickly. They are completely overwhelmed during this event.

We can only hope to not wake up and read about more violence tomorrow morning. Hopefully most of campus is passed out now after they went pretty hard today from 9am well through dinner.

IUP will say this isn't their event. The shootings were 'off campus' (although the 1200 block area of Oakland Ave is within a weak pitching wedge) ... if anything President Driscoll should pay for cleaning up the neighborhoods all of his animals destroyed the past two days.

What's further amazing is the house where an IUP student was shot and killed last night ... was surrounded by thousands of party-goers by 11am today in the houses and yards right beside it. All under the watch of Pittsburgh news crews. It was completely dispicable.

But, like I said earlier today, the show goes on .... the inmates run the asylum at IUP -- and IUP runs Indiana.

        to draw partiers.

It seems the bars down town were pretty happy, with many having special events to draw partiers. the first thing they did to kill state pattys day in State College was close these down. The town hated small loud parties, and so changed zoning to concentrate students in big apartment complexes which led to the copper beech problems and these big parties. Before the zoning crackdowns there were lots of parties with 20-30 people which were annoying but not really dangerous. Unintended consequences

BTW Carlos was a local kid, not currently a student, and had also had some run ins with the law. Harsh penalties for those who have fights or other run ins with police during the event. But there is limited things that can be done.

Carlos is taking the dirt nap. The shooter may see daylight again in 30-40 years (and should be put to death). Hopefully the girl hit inadvertently recovers. It really puts in perspective how stupid the actions taken were.

A few years ago when Cal was going through the downtown sidewalk beating incident, I distinctly remember the iup president telling the media that iup didn't have any problems like that. That condescending attitude has flown back in his face in spades several times since his gloat.

But nobody involved in the shootings was currently a student so it's all good. Indiana residents just have to hunker down one weekend every March and try not to get shot while their property is vandalized and their yards are used as public toilets. That's not too much to ask in the name of "tradition", right?

Things are pretty quiet on the IUP front. I'd assume the first recruiting news of any sort will start to leak around the mid-April signing date.

Jesse Huff appears to be the lone departure. Jeremiah Nkumsah's ACL recovery is on schedule. There are a few (incoming) transfer names I've heard but nothing concrete -- two guards in particular. There may be some news on one of them here very shortly. One is from D2 (and, no, not David Dennis) and the other is from a (high-level) mid-major. Both in the 6'4" to 6'5" range ... shooting guards.

Whomever the bigs are in this class will determine the outcome of next season. No chance they are getting past Ship/Sleva without a legit post player(s) import.

Side note on that front: Sleva's younger brother, no surprise, signed with Ship this week.

                Other items:

                * Mercyhurst has been all over the Maryland JUCO scene the past two weeks
                * Clarion has a few in line from CCBC
                * Rumors former Gannon PG Jimmy Berger will either be walking on at Akron or going D3
                * Sounds like Trevor Blondin will return for Seton Hill next season

That would be fantastic but other than on this board I haven't heard anything 'newsworthy' on that subject. Well, besides Joe's strange post-game interview in January.

The D2 transfer I keep hearing about is not from the PSAC (or the MEC).

The current D1 transfer list is fast approaching 400 names and the D2 list is growing fast. It's quite a trend.

IUP has offered Leechburg (PA) junior Mikayla Lovelace.

She's going to be tough to sign. IUP is her first offer but the the D1s are emerging quickly.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the direction college basketball is heading, particularly with both JUCO and grad-transfers.

Continuing to hear about nothing but guards ... and at best I'd call some of it second-hand information.

Joe somehow manages to keep recruiting news locked up tighter than the vaults at Fort Knox. In this age of kids having Twitter press briefings with every offer they receive ... I don't know how he does it.

The D2 transfer in the mix is confirmed still in the mix but not committed yet. He is a guard and averaged nearly 25 ppg this past season. He is not from the PSAC or MEC. He has multiple years eligibility remaining.

Glancing at the list of top scorers in D2 it seems only one guy fits all those criteria. Is his current school in the eastern part of the state?

Former Jeannette star point guard Julian Batts is transferring from LIU Brooklyn.

Call it a "hunch" (and hope) he's going to land in Jimmy Stewart-ville.

Many of us on here wanted him out of high school. He'd really be a perfect fit.
